@Jadost @VMICoastie @thehill I’m not indifferent to your argument. I think it’s important we offer more paid positions for young people interested in a career in politics. However I don’t think that means we should shut down a system of work that allows people with no prior experience.

@luke_frisco @thehill It’s government work. Some of the smartest people in the country accept horrible wages just for the quality of work and the experience. And making a job more competitive actually closes out opportunities for any of the people that didn’t have childhood opportunities at high level

@VMICoastie @thehill Taking no pay helps narrow down job application competition, clearing the way for kids with no job experience to get the said experience. Making an internship for pay screws anyone who doesn’t have a competitive resume already.

@luke_frisco @thehill And that’s a perfectly valid argument, until you realize this is the federal government and they have to tax the money they pay people. When you make internships a paid gig, you essentially make them even more competitive and people who have already graduated see it as viable

@luke_frisco @thehill If you can’t afford to work for no pay, apply for a paid job at the whitehouse. The internships are for people who can’t compete in applications for paid jobs because they don’t have any workplace experience. making all these jobs paid makes it more competitive for college kids.

@luke_frisco @thehill the only people who should intern are people who can afford it, yeah.... if the administration wants entry level jobs for pay that’s fine, but the entire purpose of internship is working for experience and not pay. If they pay them is it really a White House internship anymore?
