It’s been a busy week for our Spring 2026 Field Station intern cohort! 🌱 Our Spring 2026 Field Station interns presented twice this week! First at the Temple Ambler Spring Research Symposium, and again at the Temple Biology Department Research Showcase!
A big congratulations to Dr. Caroline Merheb on successfully defending her PhD dissertation, “Evaluating Agrivoltaics for Microclimate Regulation and Food–Energy Co-Production in Cities and Small-Scale Farming”! She is truly #TempleMade 🌱

A huge shoutout to our amazing interns who presented at the Symposium for Undergraduate Research and Creativity on main campus this past Thursday! The hard work and dedication behind each project truly stood out, and we couldn’t be prouder to see you sharing your research!
On International Day of Forests, we recognize that over 13 million hectares of forest are lost each year, while places like Temple Forest Observatory show how forests can recover and demonstrate resilience after disturbance. 🌳🌱
Research Staff Highlight! ✨ Maddie is a first-year MS student in Dr. Brent Sewall's lab, studying forest recovery after the 2021 Ambler tornado, focusing on how small mammals’ foraging decisions shape seed dispersal and forest regrowth. Camera trapping kicks off soon! 🐿🌱
Come explore more of Puerto Rico’s history! Another adventure we'll take on the Field Station Explorations Trip is a walking tour of Old San Juan, where you'll see historic landmarks—plus enjoy all the delicious coffee you can drink along the way! ☕
World Wildlife Day celebrates the beauty of our planet’s wildlife! Motion-triggered cameras across the Temple Forest Observatory capture animals that call this forest home. These photos then go to Wildlife Insights for AI species ID, and are verified by our student interns. 🦊🦌
This week is National Invasive Species Awareness Week! Invasive species are non-native organisms that cause economic and environmental harm. Spot spotted lanternflies—an insect found in PA since 2014 that damages grapes maples & more. Report sightings to PA iMapInvasives! #NISAW
Want to explore natural resource management & cultural heritage in Puerto Rico? Join our Field Station Explorations trip to Adjuntas to visit Casa Pueblo. From power restorations to coffee production and a butterfly garden, Casa Pueblo blends nature, culture, and sustainability.
Happy International Day of Women and Girls in Science! 👩🔬 The Temple Ambler Field Station celebrates the many women whose research and mentorship are integral to the continued success of our work.
When everyone is empowered to contribute, the future of science grows stronger.
Hey Owls! Interested in ecology and connecting with environmentally focused students? Join the Temple Ecological Club!
The Temple Ecological Club is an @ESA_SEEDS chapter, offering hands-on fieldwork experiences, meaningful connections, and insight into careers in ecology! 🌱🐸
Explore Puerto Rico’s rich history and culture with Field Station Explorations as we visit Piñones and Loíza, where community efforts like the Piñones Integration Corporation (COPI) highlight Afro-descendant history, art, and identity. 🌿 Sign up via the link in our bio!
Today is World Wetlands Days! A wetland is an area that becomes flooded with water either permanently or seasonally. Right here in Philadelphia, the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge includes 145 acres of emergent wetland that students and community members can visit!
Mangrove forests are vital ecosystems for young marine and avian life. With Field Station Explorations at the Piñones Mangrove Forest Reserve, you can walk along the 11-mile boardwalk and see fish nurseries, complex mangrove habitats, and diverse plant and wildlife! 🐠🌊
Happy International Environmental Education Day! Today we celebrate the importance of education that enables individuals to explore the state of nature and promote environmentally aware and active citizens. Learning from our environment is the first step toward protecting it! 🌎
El Yunque National Forest is one of the most biodiverse forests in the U.S National Forest System. Through Field Station Explorations, you will be able to see all of this in person with a guided hike through the rainforest. If you’re interested, sign up using the link in our bio!
Need to add last-minute courses this semester? Several spring courses on the Ambler campus offer opportunities to use the field station as an outdoor laboratory! 🌳 🦅 🦎
Free transportation between Main Campus and Temple Ambler is provided via the intercampus shuttle service.
Welcome back, Owls! We’re excited to kick off the spring semester at the Field Station. Here’s to a season of new research, plenty of fieldwork, and time to reconnect with nature! 🌼🌳🦉
Over the summer of 2024, Rachel Linhart worked on a project as a part of the Sewall Lab at the Field Station focusing on bat populations response post tornado. So far, she has found calls from Big Brown Bats, Eastern Red Bats, Silver-haired Bats, Hoary Bats, and Tricolored Bats!
Thorny plants, like brambles and the rose bush, are actually a sign of ecological recovery in heavily disturbed forests. They are the first to colonize open land and provide habitat for mammals and birds, and are a great natural defense for the plant itself!
