There is an island in Lekki called "Tekunle." There is a rehabilitation center on that island. The place was once a prison but is now a rehabilitation center for drug addicts.

I followed a wealthy man to the site some years ago to check on one of their sons who, unfortunately, became a drug addict while in school at a private university. They usually have an open day where parents can come and check on their kids. They also typically engage the residents in skill acquisition programs to aid their rehabilitation.

The boy we went to see learned how to cut hair, so when we arrived, his dad told him to cut his hair to see how much he had learned. After the haircut, he grabbed a bottle of methylated spirits and applied it to his dad's head. Jokingly, his dad said, "This spirit is just like water, it doesn't smell or feel like spirit," and then the boy burst into laughter. He later told us that some of the other children in the center used to drink the spirit, and they would dilute it with water.

You can't get to that island by car, it is accessible by ferry or helicopter so where we parked at Lekki, I saw other parents parking their cars and I know that those children are not from poor homes. Many people can't visit their children because of their status in the society so they sent representatives.

The drug issue is now a pandemic in Nigeria!
