The sticker design captures a common scene in northern Minnesota in winter—wolves killing deer on the ice of frozen lakes. A decent proportion of wolf-killed deer are males, and in early winter, the males still have their antlers (hence the stickers shows a wolf consuming a buck it killed).
Once wolves kill deer, they try to consume as much of the kill as they can to prevent scavengers from taking large chunks of the kill. The most common scavengers are ravens, which find and descend on kills quickly.
In the background of the sticker, you can also see a red fox waiting patiently. This is based on an in-person observation last year where we watched a red fox wait a distance from a fresh kill. Once the wolf had eaten their fill, the fox moved in to feed.
When wolves kill deer they provide food for a variety of animals that scavenge the kills. The sticker aims to capture a sliver of this fascinating dynamic.
But we cannot take credit for the design! That goes to the talented Kim Boustead who has designed all of our stickers so far and she always does an amazing job!
Note: the stickers likely will not be to folks until late December or early January because of the time it takes to get envelopes stuffed and because mailing around the holidays is always unpredictable. So please be patient but we will make sure everyone who donates gets their sticker!
