The idea of labs/models/agents being able to scrape all the information from the web for free is crazy when you think about it.

Imo it's quite similar to how Instagram/Tiktok in their early days didn't have to pay supply side (ie creators), and now have creator payouts.

Whether it's due to regulation, competitive pressure/dynamics, etc, monetization eventually gets introduced.

The announcement from Cloudflare today is a huge step forward for the x402 ecosystem. Part of the problem at this early stage is convincing AI companies that they'll need to pay for what they scrape - CF is a loud voice telling them otherwise.
