My main criticism of the new Philippine Senate building isn't even its cost and size (it can house 60+ senators despite the PH Senate only having 24 members and people blocking moves to expand it).

I hate it because it looks like a modernist abomination that screams more like a new luxury hotel-casino complex or a high-end shopping-mall than the Senate of the Republic. The architects should have added Neo-Classical or Neo-Renaissance touches and taken inspiration from Philippine pre-colonial and colonial architecture to better reflect the majesty of our history instead of creating a cold shell of glass and metal.

Government important buildings should be built with a sense of history, knowing that they will be photographed and admired for decades if not centuries to come. That's why Manila City Hall, the National Museum and the palaces of Intramuros are landmarks that are admired - because they scream timeless history and are aesthetically pleasing. Government can and should create timeless beauty if they're going to dish out billions of pesos.
