Most people think expired or no job listing mean game over.

Most people don't know this but I landed my first job as a UI designer by creating a new brand identity project for the company out of nothing.

It was 2014. I was in the last semester of college. I have been playing with Photoshop and a few other graphic tools.

I saw a company I wanted to work for. A friend was working there and mentioned about the work culture being great. But the problem was that they weren't hiring designers. But I didn't care.

I went through their website and noticed that out of all artifacts they had, their logo wasn't that cool.

So I redesigned their logo. Sent it directly to the CEO via email. No application. No HR forms. Just plain simple brand work.

Two days later, the global head of HR calls me. The founder liked my work. They created a role that didn't exist out of this air. This was a UI designer position in their Noida office.

That changed my life.

So, I made this my playbook for 13 years:
- Job expired? Reach out anyway.
- No opening? Show value anyway.
- Position filled? DM the founder anyway with proof of work.

Most candidates stop when the job board says "closed." Smart ones know that's where the real opportunity. Because once you show proof of work when role is closed, it shows high agency and a high immunity towards fear of failure. And that's a super power to have for startups.

And here's what sometimes happens after 2 week - 12 week period after the job roles gets closed:
- The role gets put on hold (not canceled)
- Offers fall through
- Candidates decline
- Hiring managers are still looking, just not posting

So generic applications usually gets ignored but when you DM with specific value, with proof of work, with understanding of their product... you're not applying anymore. You're showing that you can solve a problem they have.

But it's not that obvious for 99% of the candidates. They think "role = closed" = opportunity lost.

When jobs you're tracking expire, instead of just removing them, I'm showing you exactly their status + a tip as a reminder that the job may have gone from the job board, but the opportunity isn't.

Because knowing a job expired is valuable intelligence. It means:
- Fewer people are applying now
- You can DM without competing with hundreds
- Showing initiative demonstrates high agency as I said earlier
- The hiring manager remembers people who reach out directly with a creative approach

I've done this my entire career. Reached out to hiring managers and founders on Twitter and LinkedIn.

It worked because I understood something most people miss:

Job boards show you what companies are advertising. Direct outreach shows them what you can do.

One is about fitting into their process. The other is about creating value they didn't know they needed.

The expired job isn't the end. It's the beginning of a better conversation. Seize it.

Read this absolute horror story:

In June 2017, a minor girl accused Unnao BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar of rape, but the police refused to register an FIR. After months of inaction, in April 2018, the girl attempted suicide by self-immolation outside the CM’s residence, which finally forced the authorities to file the FIR.

Meanwhile, her father was arrested on false charges and reportedly assaulted in police custody; he later died in hospital due to his injuries. Public outrage followed. Even before any proper investigation had begun, a key witness in this mysterious custodial death was also found dead.

The case was eventually transferred to the CBI. The CBI concluded that the girl’s father died due to injuries inflicted in custody and that the assault was connected to an attempt to pressure and intimidate the victim’s family.

In July 2019, while the victim was travelling to court with her two aunts and lawyer, their car was hit by a truck, killing both her aunts and leaving the victim and the lawyer critically injured, an incident later treated as a deliberate attempt to silence witnesses.

In December 2019, Sengar was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment, but by then the victim’s family had already paid an irreparable price. The Unnao rape case had all the elements of an 80s–90s Bollywood villain plot: systemic intimidation, blatant abuse of power, and a trail of destruction that went far beyond the crime itself. But worse was still to come.

Yesterday, the Delhi High Court suspended the jail term and granted bail to Sengar. This is nothing but salt rubbed into the wounds of whatever little the victim’s family has left. An absolute disgrace. After everything they endured, this feels like the system mocking them. Shameful beyond words, and everyone should raise their voice against this.

@Theholisticpsyc I realised while being in a relationship and in usual circumstances, I have been putting other people's needs before mine as either I don't want to deal with any arguments arising from not fulfilling other people's needs or as you mentioned protecting myself from the guilt.
