One of our state specialists in literacy had some book recommendations. I was pleasantly surprised to see @MrZachG up on the board! You’re making an impact!
@brett_tingley@MrZachG@NCTQ That last point is important. It wasn’t until we passed a law in my state requiring SoR be taught in TPPs that they actually changed practice. The threat was they wouldn’t be able to recommend candidates for a license if they didn’t make the change.
@JamesAFurey Mini whiteboards should be the primary teaching/learning tool in Ed prep programs and PD for teachers. They need to see good practices in action and be given a chance to implement it in their classrooms.
@MrZachG According to research, you can’t be an advocate for students of color if you’re white. Watch this researcher try to discuss his awful study on this topic. https://t.co/QfAhnxkhNC
@BenisonMrs Unless you want your blog featured on edutopia or be praised on Ellen, then it’s a huge flex. But for student learning, you’re absolutely correct
@ldsfilmguy It’s the worst. Not sure this is your situation, but Women need to stop watching eat pray love as a roadmap to happiness and look at it as a cautionary tale.
@MrZachG Is tier 1 a fancy way of saying inquiry learning? Because I’m starting to see that more and more in elementary math curriculum and prep programs
@MrDanielBuck That’s a slippery slope mentality. there are some that say a lot of problems would go away if those teachers were black men. I think there is more difference in how the sexes teach them race/ethnicity, but I’m sick of the idea that our teachers need to look like our students.
@MrDanielBuck That’s because they go through prep programs that shove horrible learning theories and teaching strategies down their throat. Most of them think they are racist because they have implicit bias when teaching kids of color, because their teacher told them that. They are programmed
@MrZachG The admin I’ve talked to have said how they wish new teachers would learn classroom management in their Ed prep programs. Truthfully, this is not an Ed prep program issue, it’s a school admin issue. Like you said, it’s a whole school thing, but admin need to have systems in place
@MrZachG Love seeing leaders who work on implementing best practices with Ts on a routine basis. I never had anyone review my teaching in the classroom. All we had was PD once a month to implement the new district push…and it was usually differentiated instruction or inquiry based 😩
@MrDanielBuck I know literally nothing about Mike miles or Houston ISD, but one thing I do know is that numbers in education can be easily manipulated (e.g. graduation rates) If he’s making good changes then I hope it’s legit, but I always question something when they claim some like 0%
@owl_elc Khan academy has ruined math education for many students. Instead of being used as a review or extension tool I’ve seen it being used as tier 1 instruction with the teacher doing absolutely nothing. Just sitting at their desk because they don’t like teaching math.
@S_Oberle One new school I work at has glass walls with sliding doors that open up into a collaboration room for each grade level. So many handprints and mouth prints on the glass from kids who try and disrupt the classes in session. Huge pain for the janitors too. Horrible idea.
