Dr. Premraj Debta (resident of Saddhu, Raipur) purchased a Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Intelligent Electric Hybrid Zeta Plus on June 3, 2024 (manufactured in January 2023). Within months (around November 2024), the car began repeatedly stalling/breaking down. He took it to the authorized service center multiple times. The dealer/service center attributed it to "contaminated" or "adulterated" petrol, cleaned the fuel tank, and performed repairs, but the issues persisted.

The complainant got the petrol tested at a recognized SGS lab. The report showed issues linked to ethanol content (described as a "curd-like" deposit or incompatibility with the engine), not typical adulteration. Other vehicles at the same pump reportedly had no similar complaints. The car continued to malfunction despite interventions.

Core issue: The vehicle (pre-2023 manufacture) was allegedly not fully compatible with widespread E20 petrol (20% ethanol blend), leading to repeated failures. The buyer claimed this amounted to a manufacturing/service deficiency, as he wasn't properly informed about compatibility limitations.

ArgumentsComplainant (Dr. Debta):Repeated breakdowns caused financial loss and mental agony.
Lab tests confirmed the fuel (standard E20) was incompatible with the engine, causing choking/staling.
Dealer/manufacturer failed to resolve it permanently or inform about E20 limitations.
Sought replacement with an E20-compatible model of the same variant.

Maruti Suzuki Dealer & Company:No manufacturing defect; fault due to external factors (alleged contaminated/adulterated fuel).
Not covered under warranty.
They performed tank cleanings and repairs as per protocol but denied liability for full replacement.

Court's Decision (Raipur District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, order dated ~July 14, 2026)The bench (President Prashant Kundu and member Dr. Anand Varghese) ruled in favor of the complainant, citing deficiency in service:The vehicle was not E20-compatible, and the buyer should have been clearly informed.
Mere repairs were insufficient; replacement was warranted.
Ordered Maruti Suzuki (and dealer) to:Provide a new E20-compatible car of the same model within 45 days.
If not delivered: Refund full vehicle cost (₹20,50,494) + ₹1 lakh for mental agony + ₹10,000 litigation costs (total ~₹21.60 lakh, with 7% interest if delayed).

This is being called a landmark/first major consumer ruling on E20-related vehicle issues in India.

Note: This is a district consumer forum order and may be appealed. Broader industry/government position (from Maruti, ARAI, etc.) is that E20 is safe for pre-2023 vehicles based on testing and field data (no widespread damage in 1.5+ crore older Maruti cars serviced), with only minor mileage drop (~3-3.5%). Isolated cases are often attributed to fuel quality/contamination.

This is unnecessary and a financial burden. Any future govt should order enquiry and fix the financial responsibility of removing these CCTVs and any re-installation of the same.
