Dear Senior in High School,

The next 9 months of your life will impact your future like no other period of time ever has or ever will again. My challenge to you is this: Be boring.

If your future self got in a time machine and went back in time to talk to you, older you would pick this time right now and this is what you would say to yourself:

Go to school everyday.
Do your homework every night.
Be nice to your teachers.
Start thinking for yourself.
Show up early to practice and stay late.
Listen to your coaches.
Write down your goals.
Work harder than you have ever worked at anything in your life.
Eat right.
Sleep right.
Don’t hang out with losers.
It’s better to be alone than to be with the wrong people.
Break up with your past.
Go to Church/FCA on Wed nights.
Spend time at home with your parents.
You are not missing out on anything.
Think about your future everyday.
Be a leader, even if you are only leading yourself.
Find your voice and speak up.
Encourage someone everyday.
Stop worrying about what other people think.
Wear your seatbelt and get off your phone.
Listen to your grandparents stories even if you’ve heard them before.
Stop using the word “like”
Be sure to use “Sir” and “Ma’am” when answering anyone older than you.
Start doing your own laundry.
Save your money.
Stay in the moment.
And always be true to yourself.

If you don’t, you will probably still have a fun year. But if you do, you will have no regrets. You will have a brighter future. You will make a greater impact. You will have the best year of your life. And you won't have to build that time machine.
