Buying a private jet vs buying stocks:
At 35, your FA says take risk. Time is on your side.
At 70, be conservative. Preserve wealth.
Jets are the inverse
First time buyers should go turnkey. Take the safe route. You’ll pay ~10% more but avoid headaches and learn about ownership incrementally.
Over index on liquidity by sticking to popular models from good vintages with strong charter markets. If you want out fast, you can sell tomorrow.
An experienced owner (3rd-4th jet) can take more risk if they have the appetite. They'll pay 15-20% less by lowballing offers on aircraft that:
-Have damage history or poor pedigree
-Big maintenance coming due
-Need upgrades or refurbs
-Not on engine programs
-Lived in wet, humid climates without preservation (corrosion = $$)
They can optimize for the deal. Lower residual value matters less - especially if it’s your last jet.
There are investment // asset management strategies for jets just like portfolios.
12 Rousseau Chambertin is a refined & classic expression of Pinot Noir. Wild perfumed nose. Palate is a touch austere for the house style. Drink now, keep 10+
05 First Growths are still brooding. Extracted, monolithic & dense. Decant w impunity. Will improve over 5-10, keep 20+
