[BREAKING NEWS] Twelve People Killed in Cleveland Informal Settlement Mass Shooting Linked to Suspected Illegal Mining Turf Wars After About 10 Armed Men Arrive in Taxi, Split Up and Opened Fire Across the Area
Gauteng Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni is on the scene of a deadly mass shooting at the Jumpers informal settlement in Cleveland on the East Rand, where 12 people were killed and nine others injured on Tuesday night. The attack has triggered a large-scale police response and ongoing investigations in the area. The area is dominated by illegal foreigner most of whom are engaging in illegal mining.
"It's tragic and we're still accounting for 12 people who are fatally wounded, of which out of that 12 we know for a fact that nine are males and the three they are females. We can reflect on nine, of which these nine they are taken to the hospital, but we're still doing some verifications in terms of people who are injured. But for now we can talk of nine." Gauteng Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni
told eNCA.
"what it is the motive." eNCA Reporter
"As you know, this area is just adjacent to the illegal mining area. So we are having those. But one can turn this incident to be insane, to be heartless to a certain extent or extent, barbaric." Mthombeni
Police said a group of about 10 armed men arrived in a Toyota Quantum near a petrol station in Cleveland before splitting up and entering the settlement through different entrances. The suspects then moved through the area and opened fire at multiple locations, targeting people inside the informal settlement.
Gauteng police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevuhulwi confirmed that 12 people died at the scene while nine others were wounded and transported to hospital for medical treatment. She said the attackers fled in the same Toyota Quantum used to drop them off. Investigators are still working to determine the motive behind the coordinated assault.
Police have since launched a manhunt for the suspects as forensic teams continue processing the scene. The shooting has left the Jumpers informal settlement in shock and has renewed concerns over escalating gun violence in Gauteng. Authorities say investigations are ongoing, and the incident remains a developing story.

On 2 June 2021, authorities intercepted 805kg of pure cocaine worth an estimated R400 million hidden inside the hull of a ski boat being towed on the N1 near Pretoria.
The drugs were found in the boat’s hull and were being transported on a trailer pulled by a Ford Ranger.
Arrests were made at the time, yet the matter was removed from the court roll.
Serious questions remain:
What happened to the case?
Who were the syndicates behind the shipment?
Were there failures in the investigation or prosecution process?
@SAPoliceService and the @NPA_Prosecutes need to revisit this matter.
South Africa cannot allow major organised crime cases involving hundreds of millions of rands worth of cocaine to simply disappear without accountability.
