On 5/20, the Pheasant-tailed Jacana Conservation Park welcomed students from Ren-ai Agricultural Vocational Senior High School. They learned about planting and harvesting water caltrops as well as the important role the plants play for local jacanas!

Every April, Blue-tailed Bee-eaters arrive in the Kinmen Islands for breeding. To celebrate these special visitors, the WBS Kinmen will hold birding activities each weekend from 5/23-7/5 at the Cihu Triangle Fort. Come join in the fun!

The Fairy Pitta is a globally threatened species that breeds in Taiwan. A migratory bird, conservation efforts across its whole range are necessary. Listed as endangered here, scientists and environmental groups are working to protect the species!

From 5/1-5/2, the 16th Dasyueshan Bird Race took place in Taichung City. Hosted by the Wild Bird Association of Taiwan, it is Taiwan's largest birding competition. This year, a record 176 participants across 46 teams competed, with the winning team recording 121 species.

In filming Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi on Skellig Michael, Ireland, there were so many Atlantic #Puffins around, the crew couldn't remove them all in post-production. A new species was created to cover up the birds, Porgs!

On 4/26, the Jacana Guardians, a group under the Kaohsiung WBS working to protect Pheasant-tailed Jacanas, took part in an Earth Day farmers market held by Taiwan Cooperative Bank. They raised awareness and money, selling white water snowflake grown by Meinong farmers.

Sadly, data from the 2024 Taiwan New Year Bird Count showed Eurasian numbers declined 74% compared to 2014.

On 4/12, the WBS Pingtung (屏東鳥會) hosted a birdwatching activity at the NPUST (屏科大) campus. The group recorded 51 species, a record for an WBSPT outing at this site!
One of the highlights was spotting 20 circling Black Kites (黑鳶) at the back of the campus. 🐦
