For the past few days, I have been providing you with relevant documentation to help you better understand the motives of the Belgian Filip Reyntjens @freyntje, who falsely presents himself as an expert on Rwanda and the Great Lakes region, but who is, in reality, a propagandist and a denier of the genocide perpetrated against the Tutsi. I am using the field of scientific research to show you the true nature of this individual, whose motivations are far more political than academic. Reyntjens is not an honest and serious researcher who respects the standards of scientific research; he is a political ideologue, a fact he himself acknowledges.
To demonstrate this, I am using only examples taken from his own writings and statements, without omitting anything. In 2009, cornered by criticism based on his anti-Rwanda political activism, he published a book entitled "Les risques du métier = The Risks of the profession," in which he portrays himself as a victim, arguing that he is being attacked personally, not his arguments, and desperately tries to explain himself. But he does it so clumsily that he inadvertently incriminates himself. My discussion on this subject will focus on his own revelations from this book.
At the outset of this work, Reyntjens sets the scene by describing himself as a "researcher-actor," that is, an individual who claims to be a researcher but simultaneously disregards the criteria of scientific rigor. By designating himself as a "researcher-actor," Reyntjens clearly admits that in his actions, words, and writings, he is fundamentally motivated by multiple personal interests that vary according to his immediate needs, which in turn fuel his activism. Clearly, it was this "researcher-actor" motivation that, paid by former President Habyarimana, he drafted a discriminatory constitution for his regime in 1978. This act proves that he is prepared to do anything for his own interests, without any concern for integrity or intellectual honesty.
Then, with his usual arrogance, Reyntjens writes in the aforementioned work that he accepts the fact that he deviates from academic ethics to embrace and defend unilateral and biased political theses against Rwanda. He puts it this way: “On this point, the author accepts his commitment and even his activism in the face of the recent and dramatic history of Rwanda and Burundi.” The term “activism” that he uses reveals the true ideological nature of Filip Reyntjens, who unknowingly judges himself as not being the intellectual and academic he claims to be. Reyntjens himself admits this, acknowledging that he abandoned the legal field for a deliberate and accepted political commitment. I quote him: “The bridges with the political world are never broken. (…) While I am a lawyer by training, and a constitutional lawyer more precisely, the relevance of the law gradually eroded, and I drifted towards political analysis and recent history.” »
Clearly, judging by these kinds of statements coming from Reyntjens himself, if he were honest, he should admit that he is in no way a serious scientist. He can thus teach students at the University of Antwerp, publish in his journal, the Great Lakes Yearbook, which he founded, all the while knowing that he is cheating by using a methodology that deviates from the standards of scientific research.
In an attempt to maintain the status of a scientific intellectual, which he is losing through his political activism, Reyntjens is keen to downplay such a choice, which is nevertheless extremely unacceptable for a scientific researcher: “I have admitted and even embraced my activism… We meet with people and create networks which, by that very fact, develop a structure and a public image… Even when one does not choose activism, one is therefore involved in political practices.” "More precisely, once again unintentionally, Reyntjens will push his errors further by justifying the lies he publishes about Rwanda.
For example, in 2008, in his journal "Annuaire des Grands Lacs en crise" (Yearbook of the Great Lakes in Crisis), @freyntje admitted to having "a dose of opportunism" towards Rwanda, meaning a commitment driven by personal interest. This explains his current relentless and unjust attacks on the RPF, his attempts to destroy good governance in Rwanda, his defense of genocidaires, his fabrication of imaginary crimes against the RPF that never occurred, his denial of the planning of the genocide against the Tutsi, and so on. If we take this further, we cannot help but think about the fact that, having been handsomely paid by the Habyarimana regime during the drafting of its discriminatory 1978 Constitution, this comfortable remuneration created in Reyntjens a moral debt to this regime which he is committed to actively honoring as long as he lives, even though this regime prepared and committed an internationally recognized genocide, that of the Tutsi.
However, even though Reynjtens seems self-assured, he is cowardly. He doesn't take responsibility for his self-serving political choices when challenged about his bias, which is contrary to academic standards. Whenever he is asked such questions by so many people on social media, he resorts to slander and intimidation, insulting those who point out his errors. He calls them insulting names like "pathetic, idiots, stupid, poor, ridiculous, small-minded, trolls, etc."
The other motive behind Reyntjens' activism is his own admitted membership in Amnesty International. In his book, *The Risks of the Profession*, he wrote that when he arrived in Rwanda in 1976 as a trainee teacher at the National University of Rwanda, he wasn't simply an academic assistant; he was also an Amnesty International activist from Belgium. He took the opportunity to ask Amnesty International to take an interest in Rwanda. He wrote on page 16, "I invite Amnesty International to take a greater interest in the country." Therefore, whenever you see the gratuitous attacks and false accusations leveled against Rwanda by Amnesty International, know their origin: Filip Reyntjens.
For a more in-depth analysis complementing my own, you will find Jacques Morel's article, "Professor Reyntjens, Expert for the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and Friend of Genocide Perpetrators," 2019, available at https://t.co/S3HBY89xIn, of interest.
On the same subject, you should also read the excellent article by the Honorable Mugesera Antoine entitled "Filip Reyntjens: Du chercheur engagé au militant enragé = From Committed Researcher to Enraged Activist." This will reveal once again who the real Filip Reyntjens is. In doing so, his writings will only deceive his fanatics and the supporters of the regime he served. No one else.
In conclusion, the fundamental question lies in the credibility of Reyntjens' expertise on Rwanda, a country he describes as an "expert" on, while, as mentioned above, he describes himself as an opportunist and political activist. It's also worth noting that he hasn't set foot in Rwanda for over thirty years. He publishes based on biased and unreliable information gathered from social media, most of which comes from genocidal actors he has associated with in the past: his former students who became civil servants in various sectors, most of whom were perpetrators of the genocide; dignitaries of the genocidal regime whom he helped obtain refugee status; or embittered "opponents" of the RPF who left Rwanda for reasons often related to the crimes they committed there.
That is Filip Reyntjens.
Rwanda is proud to have hosted this historic UCI Road World Championships. I congratulate all the riders who competed across our capital city for their remarkable achievements and resilience. My sincere appreciation to my friend, David Lappartient @DLappartient, the UCI team, our partners, the security organs who kept the race route secure and the people of Rwanda whose energy and support made #Kigali2025 truly unforgettable.
You can’t sleep like the dead and still expect to rise out of poverty. Across Rwanda, success comes to those who wake up early and push beyond comfort. In Nyagatare, dairy farmers are up before dawn, rushing milk to collection centers. In Gicumbi, tea pickers climb the hillsides in the morning mist. In Huye, coffee growers nurture their beans with patience and discipline. In Nyabugogo, traders open shops before the city stirs, while in Kigali’s tech hubs like kLab, young innovators code late into the night and rise early to pitch their ideas. From the countryside to the city, progress belongs to those who refuse to oversleep. #HardWorkPaysOff
@UrugwiroVillage Rwanda dreams for Africa. It dreams for those tempted to give up, for those discouraged by the enormity of the task ahead. Rwanda thinks and dreams big, and works hard. It believes Africa can do it.
