At the 1953 Cannes Film Festival, a weird group of films in competition included the soap Come Back Little Sheba, Hitchcock's I Confess, and Henri-Georges Clouzot's superb The Wages Of Fear. Wages won the Grand Prix - no surprise with that kind of weak competition. Love Cannes!
