The issue with Gears is that you have 3 very different player bases you’re trying to appease:
• New-era Gears fans who love the fast, floaty movement of 4/5
• OGs who remember a slower, more deliberate approach to movement
• Casual/new players who have little experience with a third-person, cover-based shooter
How do you possibly appeal to all 3?
That’s what The Coalition is attempting to answer with E-Day.
Personally, I think the movement is headed in a direction that can satisfy all 3 groups.
I’ve played every iteration of Gears and played at a pretty high level in basically all of them. I feel like I have a pretty good understanding of what works, and what doesn’t, when it comes to movement in this franchise.
We need to find a middle ground.
Hyper bouncing and chaotic movement? New players aren’t going to enjoy learning that. It’s incredibly off-putting, and frankly, it looks ridiculous to someone who doesn’t understand Gears.
I genuinely believe this was one of the biggest reasons the player base shrank over time. The movement became increasingly extreme and the skill gap became so massive that casual or new players had almost no chance of jumping in and having fun.
But the answer also isn’t:
“REMOVE WALL BOUNCING!”
Wall bouncing has been part of Gears since Gears 1.
It was slower. You had to commit to cover. Movement was more intentional.
It continued to get faster as the franchise evolved, but wall bouncing itself has always been there. It’s a staple of Gears.
The addition of a traditional sprint, sliding, climbing, etc. makes E-Day more accessible and immediately understandable to people coming from other shooters.
And I think you have to be open to some change.
We can’t just keep making the exact same game over and over again and expect different results.
Does E-Day have issues? Of course.
Latency. Tuning. Missing classic Gears features. There’s plenty to criticize, and I’m not oblivious to any of it.
But I genuinely feel like E-Day is in good hands with The Coalition, and it seems like they’re trying to build a version of Gears that respects what made the originals special without completely alienating everyone who hasn’t been playing this franchise for 20 years.
The beta was solid.
I want to play more.
Now I’m looking forward to seeing E-Day become more polished and, hopefully, tuned into a place where OGs, newer Gears players, and complete newcomers can all have fun with it.
Please make it so that you can actually see the final kill in the feed at the end of a round in TDM. It currently makes people's round ending clips look ugly and weird. Thank you.

@GGZiiSocial I just want to play with my mates, and Ranked in previous titles is the only way to in MM
You can't all jump on social since that had a party limit, and now people want Ranked to have a party limit
Main reason I don't play Gears 5 is because my mates don't play it, for context
