From Oracle to the Lakers: When the Kalumas Quietly Stole the Breakfast

Ugandans have an interesting habit. Put us in one room, announce “Business Breakfast,” and within ten minutes someone is discussing land in Kira, another is debating immigration policy, a third is calculating exchange rates, and somewhere in the corner an uncle is confidently explaining how he almost bought half of Dubai.

Saturday’s @utcaorg organized Uganda Culture and Community Festival Business Breakfast in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey, was no different.

Ugandans and friends gathered under one roof. Conversations bounced effortlessly from investment opportunities in Uganda to tourism, construction, real estate, insurance, construction and the ever-present American immigration maze. It was networking in the finest Ugandan tradition - half business, half reunion, and entirely loud enough to need no microphone.

Yet among the accomplished faces in the room sat a gentleman I particularly wanted to meet.

Mr. Tendo Kaluma.

Just days earlier, his son, Arthur Kaluma, had completed a remarkable journey. After being drafted by the Los Angeles @Lakers and impressing throughout the NBA Summer League, Arthur earned a coveted two-way contract with one of basketball’s most iconic franchises. For Ugandans everywhere, it was a moment to stand a little taller.

Naturally, everyone wanted to hear from Arthur’s parents.

@rmayanja in a moment of levity, but also seriously reminded Mr. Kaluma that the seven-figure payday couldn’t be too far away. We erupted in laughter. Mr. Kaluma smiled with the calmness of a man who understood that the real wealth had arrived long before any @NBA contract.

His story was refreshingly grounded.

His grandfather was among the earliest English teachers in Ankole during the colonial era. Mr. Kaluma himself built a distinguished career as an Oracle database professional - proof that excellence often runs quietly through generations before suddenly making national headlines. Sitting beside his equally gracious wife, they spoke less about talent and more about perseverance, discipline, and a stubborn refusal to quit. Arthur, they said, simply never accepted defeat.

Perhaps that is the true Ugandan inheritance.

Arthur Kaluma now becomes only the second player to represent #Uganda to earn an NBA contract after Ishmail Wainright, and the first born to Ugandan parents to reach that milestone. His achievement belongs not only to his family but to every young Ugandan who dares to dream beyond what seems possible.

That, to me, captured the spirit of the Uganda Culture and Community Festival.

It wasn’t merely about food, fashion, or cultural performances. It was about bringing remarkable #Ugandans into one room - not simply to celebrate where we come from, but to remind one another of where we can go.

Sometimes inspiration doesn’t arrive with a spotlight.

Sometimes it quietly walks into a Business Breakfast… wearing a Kaluma name badge.
