What the OpenAI Realtime API means for Phone Agent flows

OpenAI released their new Realtime API at their recent Dev Day

Previously you would have needed to setup Speech to Text, LLM, and Text to Speech services separately to handle the incoming voice stream from @twilio

Now, you can just send the voice stream from Twilio directly to @OpenAI. It handles those 3 parts in one go, the STT, LLM and TSS parts

That is why they are referring to it as a Speech to Speech service

The flow diagram below illustrates what the simplified setup would now look like. Notice that on the new flow, extra services like Deepgram for STT and Eleven Labs for TSS are no longer needed

Twilio provides some source code examples for each of these projects, so you can actually check them out and see how these flows play out in the code 👇
