A rare Avercamp returns to the Netherlands!

Rijksmuseum and Mauritshuis have jointly bought Hendrick Avercamp’s Colfspelers op het ijs (ca. 1625). It is the earliest known depiction of colf — the old Low Countries stick-and-ball game that later became golf.

Painted during the Little Ice Age, when Dutch rivers and lakes froze hard enough for sport, work and spectacle.

First public showing: Stedelijk Museum Kampen from 3 October 2026. After that it will rotate between the Mauritshuis and the Rijksmuseum.

@1goodtern I'm in The Netherlands and I mask whenever I want, even if nobody else does. (Ironically mostly in hospitals, since I was infected there both times.) Getting vaccinated is no problem here. Last year they even came to me because I was recovering from a stroke. 🫂 Hug!
