RLWC 2026 | THE ULTIMATE PACIFIC DERBY 🇹🇴🇼🇸

A rivalry that goes far beyond rugby league.

Tonga and Samoa share generations of history, culture and fierce sporting rivalry. Whether it's rugby league, rugby union or any other sporting arena, there's always something special when these two Pacific nations meet.

Their rugby league rivalry dates back 40 years to the 1986 Pacific Cup in the Cook Islands, where both nations made their international debuts.

Tonga claimed the first encounter 34–16, before Samoa responded with a 46–4 victory just a week later.

Four decades on, Samoa hold a narrow 12–10 advantage across 23 meetings, with one draw.

Now they meet again on the World Cup stage, with Pacific pride and a place in the semi-finals on the line.

RLWC 2026 | THE UPSET & THE REMATCH 🏉

2017: THE UPSET 🇫🇯
2026: THE REMATCH 🇳🇿

Nine years ago, Fiji stunned New Zealand 4–2 in Wellington in one of the biggest upsets in Rugby League World Cup history.

Few gave the Bati a chance that night, but they knocked the Kiwis out in the quarter-finals and booked their place in the semi-finals.

Current Fiji captain Apisai Koroisau was part of that historic victory, kicking one of Fiji's two penalty goals before Taane Milne landed the winner.

Nine years later, three players from each nation who featured in that 2017 clash have been named to play again this Saturday.

Once again, a semi-final berth is at stake.

After pushing the Kangaroos all the way earlier in the tournament, the Bati have shown they cannot be written off, regardless of how heavily the odds favour New Zealand.

Could history repeat itself? 👀

RLWC 2026 | THE BIG DEBATE

THE PROBLEM ISN'T JUST THE BLOWOUTS. IT'S WHAT HAPPENS BETWEEN WORLD CUPS

One-sided results are a concern in both the men's and women's World Cups. But blowouts happen across many sports. The bigger concern is what happens between tournaments.

Go back 15–20 years and nations like Samoa, Tonga and Fiji were regularly on the receiving end of heavy defeats. Today, we've seen how far they've progressed through greater player depth and more opportunities at international level.

That progress didn't happen overnight.

So why aren't we creating similar opportunities for other emerging nations?

Lebanon coach Michael Cheika recently highlighted the problem. Since the 2022 World Cup, Lebanon had played just one international against Italy in October 2025, while two scheduled matches against France in 2024 were cancelled. Lebanon then fielded 12 debutants in their opening World Cup match against Papua New Guinea. Cheika's message was simple: "We just need more footy."

How can emerging nations develop combinations and compete consistently when opportunities to play together are so limited?

The Pacific Championships have been a positive step, but international rugby league needs to think beyond the Pacific.

Why not establish a broader Nations Cup involving the established nations, including England, with an Emerging Nations tournament running alongside it?

Two competitions. One international calendar.

This could give developing men's and women's teams regular Tests, greater exposure, more time together and the opportunity to build combinations against nations at a similar level.

Of course, funding, travel, player availability and scheduling are challenges. But if we're serious about growing international rugby league, these are challenges worth addressing.

The blowouts won't disappear overnight. Development takes years, not weeks. But without consistent opportunities between World Cups, how can we expect emerging nations to close the gap?

Should international rugby league introduce a Nations Cup and an Emerging Nations tournament for both men and women?

🏆 RLWC 2026 | ROUND 3 FIXTURES

The final round of pool matches is here, and there's plenty at stake across both competitions!

In the men's competition, New Zealand v Fiji will decide second place in their pool, while Tonga v Samoa could determine who tops the other pool, with England's finals hopes also hanging in the balance.

In the women's competition, England and Samoa face off in a winner-takes-all clash for a semi-final spot against the Kiwi Ferns.

Some teams are already through, but others still have everything to play for!

Who will book their place in the semi-finals?
