Why do our roads remain uneven, drainage systems shabby, and public buildings disorderly? Why are tiles in commercial spaces misaligned, plumbing at stations force-fit, and electrical wiring left hanging?
Why do so many products from our small and medium-sized manufacturers fail to meet global standards?

At the heart of all these problems is one root cause: a lack of focus on quality manufacturing.

Quality is the hygiene of manufacturing

In manufacturing, quality is not a luxury. It is the baseline. The sooner this is understood, the better the products we build. In India, we often overlook this truth. One of the fundamental reasons is the lack of respect for hands-on, foundational work.

Imagine the transformation if a welder truly understood that a perfect joint is a safeguard against future structural failures. Imagine if a mason took deep pride in aligning tiles with precision, knowing it contributes not just to aesthetics, but to the long-term durability and dignity of a building. What if a construction worker saw a footpath not as a mundane slab of concrete, but as a smart piece of infrastructure that can solve waterlogging and improve daily life for thousands?

These tasks may seem ordinary, but their impact is extraordinary if done right.

Irony is that their training is often inadequate, their work environments unsafe, and their contributions overlooked.

If India is to rise as a manufacturing and infrastructure powerhouse, this needs to change. That starts with improving training, ensuring safety, and perhaps most importantly changing the narrative. In our current social structure, a clerk earning ₹20,000 a month in an office is seen as more “respectable” than a mason or operator earning the same by building roads, infrastructure, or products. That’s tragic.

Over the past 7–8 years of building batteries, I’ve realized that two traits are crucial for building a good manufacturing ecosystem:

1. Quality consciousness
2. R&D mindset

These qualities are different but complementary.

Quality consciousness is about discipline. It means attention to detail, a structured approach, and strict adherence to SOPs.

The R&D mindset, meanwhile, is about curiosity and courage. It’s about understanding the fundamentals, constantly asking Why, What, and How, and being patient enough to see long-term outcomes. R&D thrives on discomfort. An engineer doing R&D should be disturbed by the fact that someone else is building better technology. That discomfort drives breakthroughs.

In a way, quality is tied to self-respect, while R&D is tied to ego. You build better when you respect what you do, and you innovate better when you refuse to be outdone.

This is Aswini and Anish, two IT professionals who were returning home in Pune on May 19 when an unregistered Porsche, driving at 150 km/h in Kalyani Nagar, hit them. One of them died on the spot, and the other died during medical treatment.

The driver of the car was a 17-year-old minor, allegedly returning from a club after partying with friends to celebrate their 12th-grade results.

Why this is not just an accident but a murder:

1. The car was unregistered; the showroom delivered the car without registration.
2. The parents allowed a minor to drive without a license.
3. The club owner served alcohol and admitted a minor.
4. The traffic police failed to notice an unregistered, overs-peeding car on the road for months.

When the minor was arrested at midnight, he received VIP treatment. A local MLA came to his rescue, with a team of lawyers.

The bail condition was that he should write an essay, and his parents should ensure he doesn't repeat the same mistake.

There is a huge outbreak of infectious hepatitis from a single village in Kerala. Multiple hospitals are dealing with many patients, young and old, coming in with jaundice and hepatitis due to Hepatitis A virus infection.

My Unit is also treating many uncomplicated cases, but also patients who are severely affected with acute liver failure due to Hepatitis A virus.

Strangely, many complicated hepatitis A patients are presenting with kidney failure along with liver failure.

Acute liver failure is loss of liver function that occurs quickly — in days or weeks — usually in a person who has no preexisting liver disease. Acute liver failure can cause serious complications, including bleeding and increased pressure in the brain. It's a medical emergency that requires hospitalization. Depending on the cause, acute liver failure can sometimes be reversed with treatment. In many situations, though, a liver transplant may be the only cure.

Hepatitis A outbreaks occur due to contaminated water sources, unsafe handling of food or poor hand hygiene of food handlers - watch out for those street vendors and water sources.

According to the World Health Organisation’s Global Hepatitis Report 2024, India has among the highest burdens of viral hepatitis — tied with tuberculosis (TB) as the second largest infectious killer in the world. Covid-19 was the number one infectious killer.

There are five hepatitis viruses that cause liver disease in humans. Hepatitis A and E are transmitted through contaminated food and water, and result in few weeks of self-limiting symptoms such as fever, abdominal pain, jaundice, dark urine, and sometimes itching and pale stools.

Hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C (HCV) spread through blood and bodily fluids. Some of these viruses may result in a short-term infections which resolve on their own. But others can lead to chronic life-long disease, cause cirrhosis (permanent scarring of the liver) and increase the risk of liver cancer.

HBV can be prevented by vaccination, while HCV can be cured with medication. Hepatitis D (HDV) can only infect those who are already infected with HBV. It can thus be prevented by vaccinating against HBV.

India has the world’s second highest prevalence of viral hepatitis cases, accounting for over 11% of the global burden.

Remember these:
✅Hepatitis A is vaccine preventable.
Minimum age is 12 months.
Live vaccine is single dose.
Inactivated vaccine is two doses.
Adults and seniors must also take it if living in endemic areas (like Kerala).
Cost is 1800 - 2500 INR for each dose.

✅Hepatitis B is vaccine preventable.
It is a three dose vaccine.
Check your HBV status
HBsAg - if positive, it means you are infected. Please see a doctor for further evaluation and need for treatment (all HBsAg +ve patients do not require treatment)
If HBsAg is negative and anti-HBs (antibody to HBV) is negative, then take three doses of vaccine
If HBsAg is negative and anti-HBs is positive (but titer is less than 100) then take single booster
If HBsAg is negative and anti-HBs is positive and titer is >100, then you are well protected

✅HCV has no vaccine, but it is curable with simple and effective, safe medications given for 3 to 6 months. Check anti-HCV status. If it is negative, then you do not need any further evaluation. If anti-HCV is +ve, then please see a doctor who will then assess further. The doctor will check if virus is active in the body by testing HCV-RNA in blood. If RNA is detectable, then they will go on to check the type of HCV (there are many sub-types) and provide targeted antiviral treatment for cure and also look at further follow up based on presence or absence of underlying chronic liver disease (please note: anti-HCV test may never get negative even after viral clearance with drugs, but do not worry).

Please note: Jaundice is NOT a disease. It is THE SYMPTOM of a disease. Jaundice can be due to liver or non-liver disorders.

Food regulators in Hong Kong at the Center for Food Safety has identified a pesticide called ethylene oxide in multiple food products and spices manufactured in India, by Indian companies Everest (Mumbai) and MDH (New Delhi).

Everest and MDH are the largest spices traders in India with maximum spices based food products stocked on shelves in Indian market.

Ethylene oxide has been found to be associated with cancers such as lymphoma in males and breast cancer in females.

What is Indian food regulator doing? If this is the morbid scene with international exports, what are we exposed to here?

India has no value for public health and seems like Government and most people are content with distractive politics and religion.
