It was awesome catching up with my former high school teammate, Ben Abeldt, out in Surprise during Rangers Spring Training this week!
The 6’3” left-hander from McKinney spent two seasons at TCU, where he racked up an impressive list of accolades, including 2023 First Team Freshman All-American and 2024 Second Team NCBWA All-American honors.
He was also named a 2025 Preseason All-American, but his season was cut short after suffering an elbow injury that required internal brace reconstruction performed by Rangers team physician Keith Meister.
Abeldt was dominant out of TCU’s bullpen, posting a 1.83 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, and 11.0 K/9 across 44.1 innings two seasons ago. Once he completes his rehab, he’s expected to transition into a starting role with Texas.
Before surgery, Ben’s fastball worked in the low-to-mid 90s, and he says his arm now feels stronger than ever. Combined with an above-average slider and a low arm slot, his arsenal creates a tough at-bat for opposing hitters.
Keep an eye on Ben this season as he targets a pro debut around May, likely starting in Low-A Hickory.
