Obsessed with this guy on the US men's gymnastics team who's only job is pommel horse, so he just sits there until he's activated like a sleeper agent, whips off his glasses like Clark Kent and does a pommel horse routine that helps deliver the team its first medal in 16 years.
Our #OnRamps Partnerships team is ready to connect with colleagues tomorrow at @RegionOneESC's CCMR Symposium! Join Kaci Cook & Michelle Payne for a session about how OnRamps provides students access to college experiences while helping districts meet accountability measures.
As I usually do during this time of year, I wanted to share my favorite books, movies, and music of 2023.
First up, here are the books I've enjoyed reading. If you’re looking for a new book over the holidays, give one of them a try. And if you can, shop at an independent bookstore or check them out at your local library.
What were some of your favorite books this year?
Quick recap for those new to voucher debate in 2023 in #txed.
Back when the #txlege session started, the Governor could have said, “Hey, I want to create a way for some kids, not needing disability services, to use our collective tax dollars to have a chance to get into selective schools because some people want that”. But that didn’t focus group well, so instead we got a few rounds of #txed is indoctrinating kids, not focusing on basics, and teaching kids to hate America. Also the poorly polling word “vouchers” was turned into ESAs and everything was misnamed as “School Choice”.
This then greenlit some other pro voucher members of the #txlege to pile on with anti-freedom and anti family claims towards any opposition and towards their community schools.
Then the lobbyists rolled in with daily ad hominem attacks while also repeating slogans from subpar Disney shows.
Then enough folks read the bills and realized the disconnect between the reality of the bills and the claims of the bill.
Then enough members of both parties rallied to oppose the bill.
Then the Governor started spending the remaining good will he had with conservative members of #txed by calling special session after special session. And here we are finishing round 4 tomorrow with another vote/debate on the topic
You should be caught up now.
Rare to see such impressive gains as these: AP World History teachers expanded access to ~40,000 more students, and scores increased significantly – with an especially large jump in the % of 5s. As a result, 36,000 more students earned scores of 3+ this year than last!
Think about this next time @GovAbbott offers any praise for Texas public school teachers...
Consider your most stressful day/week as a public school educator, then reflect on the following:
(1) Texas public school employees are tired, burned out, underappreciated, and many work in underresourced schools.
(2) Texas teachers busted their rears and sacrificed their own families by helping our students and communities endure a global pandemic.
THEN...
(3) Texas teachers were used as fodder as the Governor told voters they were "woke" and that they teach kids to "hate America."
AND...
(4) Texas ranks in the bottom 10 states in per-student funding.
(5) Texas' $32.7 billion surplus is the size of the budget of South Carolina.
FINALLY...
(6) Policymakers could not find it within themselves to provide teachers with any raise, nor could they find it within themselves to increase school funding...due to their insistence on tying funding to vouchers.
These people MUST be held accountable. The 2023/24 school year should not start until we: (a) increase teacher pay; and (b) increase school funding.
PERIOD.
#txlege
A message to the hardworking Republican and Democrat public school employees of Texas.
You’ve been called woke.
You’ve been told you teach kids to hate America.
You’ve been told we have a record surplus in the state budget.
You’ve also been told the only person worth a raise in salary is Mike Morath who has almost no experience actually serving public schools.
You’ve been shown your worth by this current administration.
Now what? What will we do as an education community?
It’s time to rise up. Together. 🙏🏼❤️
#txlege
How is it that a state with the 10th largest economy in the world and 2nd largest in the nation ranks 42nd in per pupil spending and 28th in teacher pay?!
Yet the Governor seeks to further take resources from #txed for a political agenda and is threatening spending millions on a special session in September. Doesn't sound democratic.
The fight is far from over. The committee has until Saturday to vote out #SB8. Keep those letter and phone calls going. #txlege
This makes my blood boil. I guess when politicians can’t buy the votes 🗳️ needed, they just burn 🔥 down the whole democracy.
@GregAbbott_TX is a disgrace.
