This was the year I had the peace of mind that I could teach students in person. They could hug me and I would be okay. This was also the same school year that I started researching how to barricade my door and ran through imaginary scenarios of how to save their lives.

In my interview I was asked why I was there. I said, “I want to be part of something greater than myself”. I’m here and part of that now. I choose to create a space that affirms their identities. I choose for “class fam” to mean more than words on a bulletin board. I choose them.

My personal win on a state reading test comes down to one thing. It’s seeing students choosing to read a book when they finish after hours of answering questions. That’s love, and I’m here for it.
