The Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts of the Kingdom of Cambodia strongly condemned the recent destruction by Thai military personnel of the wooden staircase leading to K'nar Temple, a cultural access and conservation facility constructed by the Cambodian authorities in 2017.
The deliberate destruction of this structure constitutes a serious act of damage to cultural heritage and to the conservation efforts undertaken by Cambodia over many years. It appears to form part of broader attempts to alter the existing situation on the ground, create a fait accompli, and erase material evidence of Cambodia's longstanding administration, conservation, and stewardship of the temple and its surrounding cultural landscape. Such actions are contrary to the fundamental principles governing the protection of cultural heritage and are incompatible with the obligations of States to safeguard cultural property for present and future generations.
The ministry further expresses its strongest protest and categorical rejection of Thailand's plan for the organization of public events, religious ceremonies, tourism activities, and the opening of Ta Krabey Temple for public visitation and ticketing on 6-7 June 2026.
The ministry reiterates that Ta Krabey, K'nar Temples are cultural and historical sites located within the sovereign territory of the Kingdom of Cambodia, as established under the Franco- Siamese Treaties of 1904 and 1907 and the relevant legal instruments recognized under international law.

In an exclusive interview with Voice of Vietnam (VOV) today, Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, highlighted the measures being taken to safeguard regional energy and food security ahead of the 48th ASEAN Summit in the Philippines this week.
Dr. Kao emphasised the importance of the ASEAN Framework Agreement on Petroleum Security (APSA) to navigate current global uncertainties and called for ASEAN Member Statesβ collective efforts toward achieving a resilient and sustainable ASEAN Community.
#Cambodia is disappointed that #Thailand is considering terminating the 2001 MOU.
For over 25 years, the #2001MOU has been the agreed bilateral agreement for resolving Cambodia and Thailandβs overlapping maritime claims.
The 2001 MOU was entered into to allow both parties to jointly unlock the substantial petroleum resources thought to be located in the overlapping claims area. It is an agreed bilateral agreement to resolve Cambodia and Thailandβs overlapping maritime claims, under which they agree to negotiate a joint development treaty and a maritime boundary over different parts of the overlapping claims area.
If Thailand decides to terminate the 2001 MoU, it would mean rejecting the only bilateral agreement which constitutes a bilateral framework that both parties have relied upon for the past 25 years.
Whatever decision Thailand makes in relation to the MOU, Cambodia remains committed to resolving the countriesβ overlapping maritime claims by peaceful means and in accordance with international law.
On this day, on 30 April 1999, 27 years ago, the Kingdom of Cambodia was formally admitted as the tenth Member State of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
This historic milestone marked a defining moment in ASEANβs journey towards full regional integration, reinforcing unity among Member States and deepening our collective commitment to peace, stability, and inclusive cooperation across Southeast Asia.
As we commemorate this occasion, we reaffirm ASEANβs enduring vision of a cohesive, resilient, and people-centred Community.
