Your pancreas may be producing a hormone just like Ozempic – naturally.

A groundbreaking discovery could change the way we think about blood sugar control. Researchers from Duke University have found that the pancreas might be making its own version of GLP-1, the hormone at the heart of diabetes drugs like Ozempic.

For years, pancreatic alpha cells were believed to only produce glucagon, a hormone that raises blood sugar during fasting or exercise. But this new research shows that these same cells are also capable of producing GLP-1 – the hormone that helps lower blood sugar by stimulating insulin release. In fact, alpha cells can increase GLP-1 production when needed, especially during metabolic stress, acting as a backup system for glucose regulation.

In mouse studies, blocking glucagon didn’t impair insulin secretion as expected. Instead, alpha cells “switched gears” and ramped up their GLP-1 production, improving glucose control. The researchers even discovered that enhancing this GLP-1 output could naturally boost insulin, potentially offering a new treatment for type 2 diabetes.
