Crypto in a living trust needs two things to line up: the legal authority to act and the practical access to do it.

The trust document handles the authority. It names a trustee and a successor trustee, so there's a clear answer to who may act if you can't.

The document can't give anyone a private key. Keys, devices, passwords and two-factor codes all sit outside it, and for crypto held in a personal wallet, a successor trustee with full authority and no key can't move it.

A sound plan covers both sides in three steps.

1. Name who acts. Choose a trustee and a successor, and make sure each of them is willing to serve.

2. Map the assets. List every wallet and every exchange or custody account, plus where the records are kept. A trust generally controls only the assets that have been moved into it or assigned to it, which estate attorneys call funding the trust, so the list also shows what still needs to move.

3. Plan access. Set up safe instructions with your estate attorney for how the successor reaches the keys and accounts when the time comes.

Keep those access instructions separate from the trust document itself. Copies of a trust can end up with banks, exchanges and anyone else who needs to confirm the trustee's authority, and none of them needs to see a recovery phrase.

Trust and property rules vary by state, and exchanges set their own requirements for trust accounts, so the details belong with your estate attorney.

A trust can name who may act, and an access plan shows how. The two work best when they point to the same person.
