ZAMBIA COMMEMORATES INAUGURAL WORLD WHISTLEBLOWER DAY
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), with support from the United Nations Development Programme (@UNDPZambia ), today led Zambia's inaugural commemoration of World Whistleblower Day, with stakeholders calling for stronger protection of whistleblowers and increased public participation in the fight against corruption. Held under the theme "Whistleblowing with Peace of Mind," the event highlighted the critical role citizens play in exposing corruption, safeguarding public resources, and promoting accountability.
Speaking during the commemoration, Guest of Honour and Secretary to Cabinet, Mr. Patrick Kangwa, said whistleblowing remains one of the most effective tools in detecting and preventing corruption. He noted that Government has strengthened anti-corruption efforts through initiatives such as the Online Anonymous Whistleblower System and the Public Interest Disclosure (Protection of Whistleblowers) Act. Mr. Kangwa urged citizens to report wrongdoing without fear, stressing that whistleblowers are essential partners in protecting public resources, strengthening democratic governance, and promoting integrity, particularly as the country approaches the 2026 General Elections.
Speaking at the same event, UNDP Zambia Resident Representative Dr. James Wakiaga emphasized that trusted whistleblower systems are key to building strong institutions and public confidence. He said effective reporting mechanisms allow citizens to raise concerns safely while helping institutions improve transparency, accountability and service delivery. Dr. Wakiaga reaffirmed UNDP's commitment to supporting Zambia's governance and anti-corruption reforms, including the enhancement of the Online Anonymous Whistleblower System.
Meanwhile, Anti-Corruption Commission Board Vice Chairperson Mr. Kaumbu Mwondela described the commemoration as a historic milestone in Zambia's governance and accountability journey. He said whistleblowers should be recognised as courageous citizens who contribute to national development by exposing corruption and misconduct.
Mr. Mwondela highlighted the Commission's ongoing efforts to strengthen reporting mechanisms through technology, including the Online Anonymous Whistleblower System, expanded toll-free services, and WhatsApp reporting platforms, all aimed at making it easier and safer for citizens to report corruption.
The Commemoration which began with a march from Manda Hill mall to Mulungushi International Conference Centre had various institutions both from public, private and members of the public taking part.
