Verdana is a humanist sans-serif typeface designed by Matthew Carter for Microsoft, with hand-hinting done by Thomas Rickner, then at Monotype. Demand for such a typeface was recognized by Virginia Howlett of Microsoft's typography group and commissioned by Steve Ballmer.
