Yesterday, @BillboardChris revealed that Kiano Vafaeian, a 26-year-old young man who'd pursued state-assisted suicide via Canada's MAID program because he was depressed about losing his eyesight, had been killed by the state.

An abortionist named Dr. Ellen Wiebe, who has murdered over 400 patients via euthanasia, ended his life.

I was devastated to learn this. Three years ago, I had interviewed a then-22-year-old Kiano for @realDailyWire . And we kept up correspondence for awhile. I shared the Gospel with him. He was skeptical, but indulged me, asked a few questions, and amiably engaged in some friendly debate about the veracity of the Bible.

He also sent me, the middle-aged suburban mom who is far from up-to-date on the latest music, new playlists to check out. I gave him some audiobook recommendations.

Kiano had diabetes which was causing him to go blind, but other than that, he was a perfectly healthy, handsome young man. He was in no pain. But he was, understandably, very, very angry about losing his sight. It had cast him into a depression. Yet he was funny and optimistic about a new relationship with a girl he had started dating.

His mother had worked feverishly to prevent the state from exploiting her son's emotional struggles by allowing him to pursue MAID ("medically assisted dying"--what a horrifying euphemism). And last I had talked to Kiano, she had been successful. I believed the state had been legally blocked from killing him. I was sick yesterday when I learned I was wrong.

Kiano could have lived a long, happy life once he came to terms with his new infirmity. Instead, the government of Canada encouraged him to give into despair so they wouldn't have to cover his medical bills in the future.

Kiano was such a sweet, funny kid. He actually had an almost swaggering away about him. It reminded me of the ladies’ men characters you always see in sitcoms – – like Ted Danson on Cheers or Joey on Friends. He was a flirt and it made me laugh. He also never struck me as someone who really wanted to die. He seemed more like he just wanted to undo the reality of his blindness.

No one could give him that. But I believe, if his mind hadn't been so focused on death, he could have learned how to overcome his anger and bitterness about his medical reality. Instead, the Canadian government told him to indulge that anger and depression. They told him it was okay for him to selfishly cause his mother and other family members indescribable pain by killing himself. They told him it was right and good for him to want to die over a health challenge he could not change but could certainly have learned to manage over time.

I am sick and furious at the loss of this young man. I wish I had checked in with him last year. I pray that at some final moment he remembered the Christ I or others shared with him.
