"In conclusion, consistent with recent work suggesting that nonspeaking autistic people’s cognitive potential has been underestimated (Courchesne et al., 2015), the study here suggests that their linguistic potential has also been underestimated."
Looks like @ASHAWeb is going to have to revise one of its position statements. It can no longer call assisted letterboard communication “pseudoscience” and “not evidence-based.” https://t.co/HCKWzE5qVZ #AAC#NonspeakingDoesNotEqualNonthinking#DisabilityRights
@mocost When #neurodiversity activists share the words of nonspeaking autists, they clearly demonstrate that they are part of the #DisabilityRights movement, whereas those who try to silence nonspeakers are obviously against the cornerstone principle of disability rights.
@mocost I'd like to call on every speaking autistic on Twitter who calls themselves a neurodiversity advocate to prove it by sharing the words of nonspeaking autistic people. Use the hashtag #istandwithnonspeakers.
"Non-educators often assume that standardised tests are accurate and objective. Wrong. The same student can take the same test on different points of time and get different results. All standardised tests accurately reflect family income and parents’ education." -Diane Ravitch
Big thank you to @U4CommChoice (who we just realized we forgot to mention in the credits of #A_tisticHelpingHands, whoops!) - they helped us connect with Hari Srinivasan, who made sure our nonspeaking character's arc was done accurately and respectfully! https://t.co/61JvbsFKKt
@ekverstania Thank you so much for recommending we get in contact with @U4CommChoice several months ago - you helped us find Hari Srinivasan, our fabulous nonspeaking consultant, who helped make sure we did right by our nonspeaking character for this: https://t.co/9CucFHLSKS
@ekverstania@U4CommChoice It's really exciting! We at @ActualA_tistic have been hard at work for ages; now we can finally share Helping Hands - & apart from having a main nonspeaking character, a main trans character & a main autistic parent character, it's also REALLY FUNNY imo https://t.co/A1wb440wY1
[THREAD] "If you’re not in the autism world and if you’re not in the world within that world of nonspeaking autistics, those who have historically (and quite noxiously) been labeled “low-functioning,” then you might not know about the current controversy involving Wikepedia."
I have undertaken to post a piece of writing, or a video or some other artefact every day from a nonspeaking autistic person who uses words or word-linked symbols to communicate.
@ekverstania@folkycat@SoniaBoue@sarasiobhan @SJaneBernal And see here under User Blogs, Documentaries, and Videos for other nonspeakers communicating: https://t.co/86iibobkjk
Contrary to popular misconception, there is in fact *abundant* evidence to support the use of RPM, FC, and related AAC teaching methodologies! See our newly updated compilation of peer-reviewed research https://t.co/1DOFx1fznO #DisabilityRightsAreCivilRights
"What goes for science one day is often disproven. Our responsibility as humans is to be humble, not to much to question people's real or perceived limitations. But to question our own limitations in understanding them." -- Bob Williams
Researchers Show Parachutes Don't Work - "Scientists often read just the conclusion of a study and then draw their own conclusions that are far more sweeping than are justified by the actual findings.” https://t.co/WB1yIRd61s
