Public Interest Law Clinic at the University of Calgary. We are law students exploring effective advocacy on systemic issues affecting Calgary's vulnerable.
An important story we only get because of access to information law - and we also get this story so late because our access to information system is so slow.

@jennierussell_ And Clayton chose not to renew her term as Commissioner a couple months ago and. This is a very unfortunate time for the government to be appointing a new commissioner.
The OWA (to their credit) was quick to explain: these are the pipelines from the Sanling liquidation now entering the orphan inventory, and the OWA anticipated this addition to the inventory.
These pipelines are expected to cost around $5,000 each to clean-up.
The Orphan Well Association's inventory grew from April 2022 to May 2022, rising by around 135 sites and a surprising 1,200 pipelines. I'll follow up if I can find out why!

If that's making progress, I'd hate to see what a Management plan that fails looks like.
This shows a weakness in legislated reporting requirements: the departments report late, and the reports created tend towards overly optimistic press releases.
Another odd day on Canada's Species at Risk Registry, with The Report on the Progress of Management Plan Implementation for the Blackstripe Topminnow, Pugnose Minnow, Spotted Sucker, and Warmouth in Canada for the Period 2009 to 2015 (https://t.co/ePmBSc8uzw) ...
Which is wrong: two of the species are now more endangered than they were in 2009. In May 2015, COSEWIC reassessed the Warmouth as "Endangered", and the Pugnose Minnow was up-listed to threatened in 2019. The other two species remain in the "special concern" category.
@BankesNigel This reminds me: what happened with the panel on "Addressing Legacy and Post-closure Sites". Those sites aren't part of the OWA system. https://t.co/zQHjXe1t9t
The 2022/2023 Orphan Fund Levy for orphan oil and gas infrastructure has been set at $72 million (note $30 million of it will pay back existing government loans). https://t.co/eFqOEUiM4C
That's far too low to make progress on the orphan well problem, as we explained:
