In view of a "series of deeply disturbing" egregious crimes against girls and women in Delhi, Supreme Court Monday said it was a systemic failure on the part of Delhi govt and police that they can't provide a safe and secure environment to the public, which is their basic fundamental right, and sought an explanation from the authorities.

Referring to the gang rape of a 17-year-old girl at Aastha Kunj Park, the gang rape and murder of a girl in Swaroop Nagar, and the sexual assault of a girl inside a moving bus that covered a distance of over 47km from Greater Noida to Delhi, SC said that these have raised serious concerns about the safety and security of public spaces in and around the city, and took suo motu cognisance and registered a case.

In a first, Judge Rajani Ranga of Rohini Court pens a special message to the child survivor while convicting the perpetrator:

“Beta when u said ‘jab tak uncle buddhe na ho jaaye, tab tak unhe jail mein hi rakha jaye’. This Court listened. And this Court has answered your plea.

Today this a court has ordered that the man you called ‘uncle’ will never walk free again. He will live in a cage for the rest of his life. He will grow old in that cage. He will die in that cage. He will never be able to hurt you , or your little sister or any other child ever again.
