The concerns raised regarding the dramatic decline in the number of Sinhalese families living in parts of the Northern Province deserve serious national attention.
As the Sri Lanka Freedom Party's District Leader for Wanni, I believe every citizen—Sinhala, Tamil, or Muslim—must have the right to live anywhere in Sri Lanka in peace, dignity, and security.
If reports that only around 150 Sinhala families remain in certain areas are accurate, we must honestly ask why this has happened and what practical steps are needed to ensure that all communities can live, return, and rebuild where they choose. The end of the war should have marked the beginning of reconciliation for all Sri Lankans, not the continuation of demographic fear or division.
Our objective must never be to create competing narratives of suffering. It must be to build one united nation where every community enjoys equal rights, equal protection, and equal opportunity.
Reconciliation cannot be selective. It must include every Sri Lankan.

Welcome news of progress towards peace between Iran and the United States.
At a time of heightened tensions in West Asia, dialogue remains the only sustainable path forward. Sri Lanka hopes this development leads to lasting peace and stability for the region, where thousands of Sri Lankans live and work.
I also commend Pakistan's constructive role in facilitating dialogue. As a longstanding friend of Sri Lanka, Pakistan's efforts towards peace and regional stability deserve recognition.
May peace prevail over conflict.

The comments made by a Northern MP @GGPonnambalam, as reported in the @jaffnamonitor, once again raise a serious concern: were voters in the North misled with promises of large-scale land releases and other highly sensitive issues during the election campaign, by the NPP campaigners, who got an overwhelming majority, only to be made to understand later that such promises cannot be delivered?
History has taught us a painful lesson. Giving communities hope and then dashing those hopes creates frustration, mistrust, and division. We witnessed where such grievances and political opportunism led this country in the 1980s. We must never repeat those mistakes.
At the same time, as someone with roots in the Badulla District and who has represented the Haputale electorate, home to the Diyatalawa Military Academy and major cantonments of our Armed Forces, in the house of Parliament, I know firsthand that land has been gazetted for national security requirements in many parts of Sri Lanka, not just in the North.
This is not a Northern issue alone. Across the country, military training and security needs have required restrictions on civilian access to land. There have even been unfortunate incidents where farmers have been injured by stray rounds during training exercises, in areas like Walimada and Kahagolla in the Badulla District. These realities exist beyond ethnicity and geography.
National security requirements must be given due priority by any responsible government. Equally, politicians must be honest with the people about what can and cannot be done.
I urge both the Government and Northern political leaders not to politicise sensitive matters relating to land and security. Sri Lanka needs responsible leadership that unites communities, not rhetoric that deepens divisions for short-term political gain.

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party, and myself, extends its sincere appreciation to the Indian Engineers Task Force for their dedicated assistance in post-Ditwah reconstruction efforts in Sri Lanka.
Their contribution during a time of immense difficulty reflects the longstanding friendship and regional cooperation shared between Sri Lanka and India.
We thank the team for their professionalism, commitment, and humanitarian spirit in helping affected communities rebuild and recover.
Wishing them a safe journey home and continued success in their service.

Strongly condemn the reported terrorist suicide car bomb attack in Pakistan.
Terrorism in all its forms must be rejected unequivocally. South Asia has suffered immensely from extremism and violence, and innocent civilians should never be made victims of such cowardly acts.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Pakistan at this difficult time. Wishing a speedy recovery to all those injured and strength to the families affected.
The Sri Lanka Freedom Party stands firmly for peace, stability, and regional cooperation against terrorism.

Deep concern must be raised regarding reports that the Central Bank has intervened to “restore order” in the exchange market by informally influencing exchange rate movements amid growing currency volatility. At a time when Sri Lanka’s economic recovery is heavily dependent on IMF-backed reforms, transparency, market confidence, and policy credibility are absolutely critical.
Any perception of artificial management of the exchange rate outside clear market principles risks undermining confidence among international lenders, investors, and multilateral partners whose support remains vital for Sri Lanka’s recovery.
Equally alarming are circulating concerns that several large vehicle importers had reportedly opened substantial Letters of Credit for EV imports just prior to tax revisions being announced. If true, this raises serious questions about possible leakage of inside information, unequal access, and corruption benefiting powerful commercial interests.
Sri Lanka cannot recover economically while markets are clouded by suspicion, policy uncertainty, and perceptions of privileged access.
The Government must immediately ensure transparency, accountability, and public clarification on these matters before further damage is caused to Sri Lanka’s already fragile international credibility.

Deeply concerned by reports and visuals emerging from the War Memorial involving former Minister @weerawansa_w being manhandled and heckled by law enforcement officers.
While political and ideological differences are natural in any democracy, the politicisation of the police force and the use of state institutions to suppress opposition voices or intimidate differing political opinion is a dangerous path for Sri Lanka.
War memorials are places of national remembrance and dignity. Such incidents only further damage public confidence in the neutrality of state institutions and raise serious concerns regarding democratic space, political freedoms, and the rule of law in the country.
A democratic government must tolerate dissent, not attempt to silence it through force or intimidation.

Deep concern must be expressed regarding recent calls by @GGPonnambalam urging the Tamil Nadu Government to formally declare a so-called “Genocide Day” relating to Sri Lanka’s conflict history.
Even respected Indian analyst M.R. Narayan Swamy in an open letter to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister @TVKVijayHQ in the @jaffnamonitor has cautioned against emotionally charged and politically motivated narratives that risk damaging regional stability and India–Sri Lanka relations.
As a Sinhala politician actively working in the North — particularly as District Leader for Wanni for the Sri Lanka Freedom Party — I see firsthand a very different reality emerging among the younger generation. Many young people, both Tamil and Sinhala, who did not directly witness the war are growing up identifying themselves first as Sri Lankans. They seek opportunity, dignity, education, economic growth and peaceful coexistence — not renewed division and agitation rooted in the darkest chapters of our past.
Sri Lanka suffered immensely from conflict. We must not allow future generations to be dragged backwards by rhetoric designed for political mobilisation rather than genuine reconciliation.
I respectfully call upon Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay @TVKVijayHQ and the Government of India to act with wisdom, maturity and strategic foresight in handling sensitive Sri Lanka-related matters. Regional peace and harmony must always prevail over emotional political symbolism.

The observations made by veteran Indian analyst M.R. Narayan Swamy on the Sri Lanka–Tamil Nadu fishermen issue reflect the importance of experience, strategic maturity, and balanced regional thinking.
It is important that the newly elected Tamil Nadu Chief Minister @TVKVijayHQ, is guided by experienced voices and diplomatic realism when dealing with sensitive international and maritime matters involving neighbouring countries.
Statements made on political platforms during campaigns may energize crowds, but governance demands responsibility, restraint, and long-term thinking.
Sri Lanka and India share deep historical, cultural, and strategic ties. Issues affecting fishermen, maritime boundaries, and regional relations must be approached through mature dialogue — not emotional politics.

Deep concern must be expressed regarding the sudden death of the former SriLankan Airlines CEO at a time when major corruption investigations connected to the Airbus deal and public funds are under intense scrutiny.
Equally alarming are reports that affidavits had allegedly been submitted through legal representatives claiming threats and intimidation linked to ongoing investigations.
In such a context, the Government and law enforcement authorities have an absolute duty to ensure a thorough, independent, and transparent investigation.
Sri Lanka has witnessed too many incidents in the past where unanswered questions weakened public confidence in justice and the rule of law.
At a time when allegations involving millions in losses to the State are already damaging Sri Lanka’s international image, any perception that “loose ends” are being tied up to protect powerful interests will be devastating for public trust and the country’s credibility.
Justice must not only be done — it must be clearly seen to be done.

The continued extension of Emergency Regulations in Sri Lanka raises serious democratic concerns.
Even during the height of the war against terrorism, the use of Emergency powers drew heavy criticism both locally and internationally. It is therefore deeply troubling that such extraordinary measures continue even in a period where the Government claims stability and normalcy.
Emergency law must never become a substitute for democratic governance.
The prolonged continuation of these regulations creates damaging international perceptions about Sri Lanka’s democratic health, civil liberties, and institutional stability — especially at a time when the country is attempting to rebuild global confidence.
Sri Lanka must be governed through strong democratic institutions and rule of law, not through a prolonged state of emergency becoming the new normal.

“2026 will be the year of jailing the corrupt,” — as reported by Newswire Sri Lanka from the NPP May Day rally.
While accountability is essential, publicly framing a specific year for “jailing” raises serious concerns about process, independence, and due process.
At a time when Sri Lanka is already under global scrutiny over alleged financial irregularities in institutions like the Central Bank and Treasury, such statements risk projecting an image of politicised justice rather than rule of law.
For international partners, investors, and institutions, confidence is built on transparent systems — not declarations.
Sri Lanka must ensure that justice is seen to be fair, independent, and free from political timelines, especially in the eyes of the world.

Noting reports that Iran has conveyed a fresh proposal to the United States through Pakistani mediators, we welcome all sincere efforts towards de-escalation in West Asia.
As Sri Lankans we hope for an early easing of tensions across the Middle East, including Israel, where thousands of Sri Lankans live and work, contributing vital foreign exchange to our economy.
We commend Pakistan’s constructive role in facilitating dialogue — a nation that has stood by Sri Lanka during our own difficult journey towards lasting peace.
As a non-aligned country, we firmly believe dialogue must prevail over conflict.

Serious allegations now circulating — including references to international media and statements attributed to ICC leadership — regarding developments in Sri Lanka Cricket demand urgent attention.
If even a fraction of these claims about political interference, backdoor arrangements, or external pressure is true, the consequences for Sri Lanka are grave — not just for cricket, but for our international credibility as a country.
Sri Lanka Cricket has already faced sanctions in the past. Any perception of interference risks further action from the ICC and damages our standing globally.
Equally concerning is the growing narrative being picked up beyond our borders — that governance in Sri Lanka is becoming politicised, opaque, and transactional.
The Government must immediately clarify:
* Whether there was any direct or indirect political pressure
* Whether international stakeholders have been engaged outside formal channels
* What assurances have been given to safeguard the independence of Sri Lanka Cricket
This is no longer just a sports issue — it is a national reputation issue.
Sri Lanka cannot afford to be seen as a country where institutions are negotiated behind closed doors.
Transparency is not optional. It is essential.
