James Webb Unmasks the Fierce Beauty of a Dying Star’s “Lion” Nebula

Deep in the constellation Gemini, a star is taking its final, spectacular bow—and the James Webb Space Telescope has just captured the drama in breathtaking detail.

The planetary nebula NGC 2392, better known as the Lion Nebula, has been transformed into a cosmic portrait of astonishing complexity. Combining near- and mid-infrared light, Webb’s new image peels back layers invisible to ordinary telescopes, revealing not only the glowing hot gas but the cold dust and hidden molecular clouds that shape this stellar swan song.

At the heart of the scene sits a blisteringly hot white dwarf—the shrunken core of a once Sun-like star that has already cast off its outer layers. On the image it forms the “nose” of a lion, while a glowing cloud of ionized hydrogen sketches out the rest of the fierce feline face. The star’s intense ultraviolet radiation is cooking the surrounding material from the inside, ionizing the gas and slowly eroding the dust structures.

Inside the nebula, cavities, shells, and elegant concentric rings keep expanding outward. They smash into remaining dust clouds and tear them apart—yet some dusty formations stubbornly survive. These holdouts create the lion’s brilliant “mane”: the brightly lit inner surface of a dust shell still glowing under the star’s relentless radiation.

What we see is only a fleeting chapter in the star’s long life. The intricate structure took thousands of years to form, yet in just another 10,000 years—barely a blink in cosmic time—the entire nebula will dissolve into the interstellar medium, leaving the white dwarf alone in the dark.

With this portrait, James Webb has turned a quiet stellar death into a vivid, living spectacle—one that reminds us how even the end of a star can be spectacularly beautiful.
