The Death's Head Hawkmoths are coming through in far greater numbers now as we (@MigGenomics) study #insectmigration in the Pyrenees.
These moths are v migratory and will travel to Africa in the Autumn, they squeak AND they smell like honey - something they steal from honeybees!

One of the first Small Tortoiseshell butterflies of the season arrived in our mountain pass yesterday. We think that these insects are highly migratory meaning that this individual could have come from the UK, headed to warmer climes further south! @MigGenomics #insectmigration

The walk up to the top of the Pyrenean mountain pass to check the moth trap is always beautiful, but this was extra exciting! The first Death's Head and Convolvulus Hawkmoths of the #insectmigration field season! (Preceded by a bird survey featuring a bearded vulture flypast!)
