都市化や地球温暖化に伴う気候変動の影響で米の生産はここ十数年ほぼ増えていない。かつ、他の穀物生産に比べ、米の生産が環境に悪影響を及ぼす側面もある。以上より、特にアジア諸国においては生産の中心を米から他の穀物に転化する政策が採られているという話。
