"Quien ha entrevisto el universo, quien ha entrevisto los ardientes designios del universo, no puede pensar en un hombre... aunque ese hombre sea él." J. L. B.
@Ognifedefingo And also, very related to your point, I am very skeptical about training a machine to constantly ask “interesting questions” for humans all the time, tech bros have no idea about the inherent unlimited potential of mathematics. AIs might end up wasting their time in dead ends…
@MTabarrok I think this anthropomorphizes AI too much, I doubt AIs will questions as such.
But also, discovery is by definition a human activity, for the sake of argument, if there was a godly AI possessing all the answers, humans would still need to understand them, i.e. discover them.
@krishnanrohit I have asked gemini pro a few conceptual math questions and it mixes up correct statements with completely made up nonsense. I point out a mistake in a "proof", it insists it is not and, finally, when I ask to provide details, it realizes it can't. I still use it everyday though.
@spicey_lemonade Have a chat during a coffee break in a conference for instance, talk about their students and their thesis projects... I know it's hard to imagine mathematicians might care about anything other than solving a list of given random problems.
@trekedge Lol, I don’t know which movies you’ve been watching but even now, roughly 99% of mathematicians are not hired by universities to do research anyway.
@octonion Right, I instantly ignore their opinions after I see such insane statements, typically they claim there will either be immortality for everyone or extinction…
@itaisher Also, "important" is very subjective, so far AI has solved problems in discrete mathematics which is a minuscule part of the whole thing, not saying it cannot be of use in other more theoretical areas.
@QiaochuYuan First they came for the discrete mathematicians and I didn't care because I was not into discrete stuff…
My area is very far from combinatorics, but will they come for the theory builders as well? 🤷♂️
@Jacob_Tsimerman Isn't this most likely alternative activity just more teaching/training? Except at elite institutions, people are hired for teaching anyway and not research.
@GuiveAssadi My feeling is that Chinese individuals are not perceived as dangerous or threatening, it’s only through its government that China is viewed as a threat.
