Bats are misunderstood. 😕
By tracking and sharing their activity through Project BatCast (@uf_bats), Florida researchers @BatsOnTheMove and @DitiJay are helping people learn about the importance of one of the most understudied mammals in the world. 🦇
RIP old bat house. @UF staff dismantled the deteriorating house ahead of Ian after completing last week's bat exclusion. The colony should now be comfortably ensconced in the two remaining bat barns.
Bats are finicky about their choice of roost. So it was with great relief that @UF staff watched some 350,000 bats relocate from the old, deteriorating campus bat house to the newest one, which had been empty since 2017.

@UF scientists and staff must coax a renowned bat colony to move house. But getting hundreds of thousands of bats to go where you want them to proves to be an elusive art. 🦇

Stellar emergence this evening at the UF bat houses. Hundreds of thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats emerge together to forage and make quite the spectacle!
Really enjoyed learning about @BatsOnTheMove and @DitiJay's bat monitoring research at the bat houses last night! Bonus -- @DitiJay taught me I can take slow-motion videos on my phone! #iDigTRIOUF
Hopefully everyone had some fun yesterday for iDigTRIO day 1! Here are a couple of snippets we have to share: a nature walk at La Chua Trail & a visit to the UF bat houses to learn about a bat monitoring project led by @DitiJay and @BatsOnTheMove#iDigTRIOUF

We started acoustic monitoring of the #bats at the UF Bat Houses for Project BatCast (@uf_bats)— these data look great! Hundreds of thousands of free-tailed bats make a lot of noise echolocating their way into the world each night.
🦇🦇Happy #BatAppreciationMonth!🦇🦇
It's October! That can mean only one thing...BAT WEEK IS COMING! We will be posting all month to celebrate and appreciate bats. Please take this time to try & recruit a few friends to follow our page & learn about bats. #BatsNeedFriends#HappyBatWeek2021#Bats#AlbertaBats
Tens of thousands of free-tailed #bats emerged from the #UF bat houses last night to hunt for insects in the nice weather. Project BatCast is working to monitor their activities and track their population!

Just for reference, this is how bat biologists see our little insectivorous #bats. Little lumps of cute fluff with a doggo face. Add a large dose of respect for a wee mammal that could be 20+ years old & highly intelligent. #HesLookingAtYou#ThoseEyesKnow#EveryLittleThingCounts
Slow motion release of a Southeastern myotis (bat) by @ElizaBat_Braun at @UF@UF_IFAS Ordway-Swisher Biological Station... Really appreciate the @MyFWC bat team taking time out of their schedules to share their AMAZING research with @UFWildlife Techniques students! #batwomen
