Many Nigerian mothers were very angry people.
This is not to make excuses for their bad behaviour, but most were unhappy in their marriages and trapped with horrible partners.
So they usually pour that anger on their daughters.
So many people in the replies talking about how they used to fantasize about dying by the hands of their parents when they were children, just so their parents would feel just a little bit of guilt
Yet people still think beating children is just discipline and not abuse.
I got into medical school, realized that we don’t get as much holidays and I was so happy because that means I don’t have to go home to endure my mother’s screaming and abuse
I was suffering in medical school but guess what? I still picked that over going home.
I was free!!
my dad will abuse you, i will come to your rescue, my dad will abuse me because of you and you’ll allow it happen and then you too will abuse me
only me, you’ll cry to me and you’ll still beat me, only me
only me your savior and your slave
only me
Somewhere in her heart, she believes all her “discipline” is the reason I’ve come so far so fast in life.
Me that is living with clinical depression, anxiety, and ADHD. Me that has OD’d again very recently.
Told Asher a few days ago that I was with someone who spoke to their parents like they were actual friends and it made me uncomfortable because it was unusual for me to witness. I kept waiting for the ball to drop.
The stories of mother to daughter abuse that are being shared as a result of this piece is the reason I hate those “give grace to your mother” tweets. Mothers are usually their daughter’s first abusers and we need to talk about this more. It’s a cycle that needs to end!
personally, i think one of the most dangerous things about beating children, is that you teach them early enough that someone can love them and still physically hurt them. imagine your daughters growing up and navigating romantic relationships with this notion.
My mother own was to berate. One hour down and she's still talking. Hurtful words o. How she trained other people's children and they never stressed her like me. How lazy and stupid I am. The amount of "o gor". Chai
Everyone’s mom was beating them while mine called me stupid, useless, ugly etc every chance she got. There is NOTHING she hasn’t said to me under the guise of ‘correction’
My first bully for real
More than the obligatory love, no one talks about the trauma of watching an abusive parent "change" so you're left looking crazy and stuck on some "thing" that happened in the past
Much love, cyn ❤️
Something about Nigerian parents expecting a deep emotional bond when you’re older meanwhile all they did while you were younger was insult and physically abuse you
You’re surprised that I recoil at your touch when you hug me and I never come home but you used to beat me
Anytime I tell my mum that it's too late for us to be besties she starts to crash out. Like she literally has no recollection of how mean and unapproachable she use to be.
In her head, she was and has always been mother of the year. Girl bfr.
