Here are two tips Maya Sugarman has for helping people open up:
1. For video stories, pre-interview your subject to make sure they feel comfortable beforehand
2. For photo stories, put your camera away until the subject feels more comfortable
Sugarman said that when she’s working on a video story she asks herself, “how would my subject react to this video? Does it depict their story accurately?”
