I'm 47. When I was 3 my older cousin let go of my hand for maybe ten seconds near a lake and I went under. Another cousin, 11 at the time, pulled me out.

Family's told that story my whole life exactly one way, the 11 year old was the hero, the other cousin was careless and nearly got me killed.

Nobody ever asked why a 3 year old was standing at the edge of open water being supervised by a child barely old enough to supervise herself.

That cousin carried the blame for decades, still brings it up sometimes at holidays like she's confessing something. I finally told her two years ago it was never her fault, she was eight, she should've never been the one responsible for me in the first place.

She cried. Said thirty nine years and I was the first person in the family to say that part out loud.

Mamdani was criticized for not wearing a helmet when riding a bike in NYC. Mamdani listened and told those criticizing him that they were right and he needs to do better. He bought a new helmet and posted “I’m listening and learning”. People were so impressed to be told that they were right and that a politician would publicly admit they were right. One guy said “First in my bloodline to hear a politician say ‘you’re right, I’ve got to do better,’” one commenter wrote. “I honestly feel like witnessing a politician simply say ‘you’re right, I’ve gotta do better’ just healed something within me.
