BREAKING: The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 8-0 in favor of a proposed Utah railway project that would transport crude oil from the Uinta Basin, rejecting a lower court’s decision that had blocked the project over environmental concerns. The ruling narrows how far environmental reviews must go under federal law, delivering a win for infrastructure developers and energy interests.

The 88-mile railway, backed by seven Utah counties and private investors, would connect the Uinta Basin to national freight lines for oil transport.

The Surface Transportation Board approved the project in 2021 after issuing an environmental impact statement.

Environmental groups and Colorado’s Eagle County challenged the approval, citing increased oil production and train traffic along the Colorado River.

The D.C. Circuit Court sided with challengers in 2023, saying the review failed to account for broader downstream effects.

The Supreme Court disagreed, ruling the agency’s scope was sufficient under the National Environmental Policy Act.

Business groups say overly broad reviews risk delaying or killing vital infrastructure.
