WORLD CUP THIRD PLACE! 🥉
I wanted a basic explanation of what we’d need from a Scotland perspective in terms of being one of those best placed third teams, so here’s a rundown of each group and what we want to see from the final group games 🏴
On this day 37 years ago: Pan Am Flight 103 exploded over Lockerbie, killing all of the crew and passengers on board. Eleven people from the town also died when burning wreckage crashed into the land.
There will be people who think this is deeply unfair, but it can’t be avoided anymore. You cannot do politics like this now - going on the radio or TV and using a clever form of words to avoid saying the thing you think will end your career. It doesn’t work and it hasn’t worked for a long time.
The career-ending thing isn’t saying “I broke that promise and I’m sorry, but here’s why I really think it’s the right thing to do…” It is repeatedly saying you did it without holding up your hands; in the process treating your audience like they’re daft and eroding trust so much that nobody listens to your actual argument. Why would you get a hearing for what you believe is right if you can’t show enough respect to admit your choice broke a promise?
No parent would accept that kind of apology from a child; why do some of our politicians still think voters should accept it from them? Trust people to give you a hearing and they’ll listen even when you admit mistakes - maybe even more then, because it is human.
Imagine being Kenny McLean; you grow up desperate to play football, you graft your whole life for it but you’re never sure if you’re going to get to experience a World Cup like the one you watched your country play in as a 6 years old boy.
Then, at the age of 33, an injury to a teammate means you come off the bench early on in a qualification decider, you’re seconds away from winning it, you’ve got the ball at your feet with everyone just hoping to see out the last few delicate seconds and send Scotland there, you’re on the halfway line, the keeper is scrambling back and you think “You know what; bollocks to it!” and smash it towards goal, uncorking bedlam all around you, instantly creating one of the most iconic moments in Scottish football history and becoming a hero forever more.
It’s hard not to be romantic about the game.
So many roads in Britain are flooding on a frequent basis. But before they blame it on cow farts causing climate change, it might helpful if local councils could be arsed to regularly unblock and clean the road drains. That’s what we pay our council tax for, apparently.
If you feel like you're bad at your job and it's making you depressed, just consider that, as the investigation of the recent heist revealed, the password to access the Louvre's videosurveillance system was "Louvre".
MSPs are getting free food and drink for working after 7pm.
They get sandwiches, cakes, choccy bars and crisps.
Exactly the foods they tell us not to eat and exactly the same foods they are banning from BOGOF deals so we have to pay full price.

The goalkeeper, frustrated with his team, made an assist to himself from midfield using the goalpost and scored an incredible goal.

A stark reminder of why our shelter exists and the lives that have been saved because our doors stayed open.
When the world sleeps, we stand with those who have nowhere else to go.
Every bed, every meal, every night matters. 💙
