A sad loss - recall sharing a dinner table with Colwyn Trevarthen at the Liverpool conference in 2014, watching him delight in (& commentate on) the dancing that was taking place before us all #musicality He'll get due acknowledgement at our next infant development teaching day

recognized) are a form of "manic repair."
Instead of doing that, Coltart says we must practice, first, "bare attention," which she defines as “profound and self-forgetful opening of oneself to another person.” This sounds simply but requires constant discipline & effort.
@uk_pit So sad to hear this. He and Bob Hobson were wonderful therapists and mentors to many. I shall never forget reading 'The Persecutory Therapist' as a newly qualified clinical psychologist. It changed me. And his lectures on play -- wonderful!

We share the sad news of the passing of Russell Meares – co-founder of the Conversational Model with Bob Hobson. He died on 11th June after a series of hospital admissions.

Getting ready to introduce my students to the late, great Nina Coltart on "bare attention" and how to listen as a psychotherapist. A few thoughts:
When friends say to me “I could never do your job,” they invariably mean that being regularly exposed to, e.g., tales of
A short but important story.
I was a children's doctor,
Then life happened.
Maternity leave spent in therapy & on medication for postnatal depression.
As I returned to work,
My rota dictated I would be on call on my second day back.
A specialist hospital I'd never worked in

Great day for learning PIT - overview of the integrative history, challenging role plays, a conversation with two of the early developers and a practice/theory forum! Not only a great day to learn but also the inaugural meeting of the new practitioner training

@CatalyseC Great sadness hearing of the untimely death of Tony Roth- a great ally for research in psychotherapy and thank you particularly for the work with Else Guthrie on the PIT competence framework. A great loss to us all.
@mickcooper77 Very interesting analysis of “what works” in psychotherapy- a new take on the “super shrink” literature with an interesting framework to help us think about our own therapeutic approaches
This is Kieran. He is a GP and the husband of Lynsey who’s story I shared with you a few weeks ago. For those of you who don’t know Lynsey’s story already, her mental health deteriorated rapidly during her perimenopause. She sustained multiple fractures after trying to end her life and was in a trauma hospital for a few weeks. She was prescribed numerous drugs and even received nine sessions of ECT without any improvement. Kieran had to battle to finally have HRT prescribed for her which thankfully has seen her improve to the extent she no longer experiences these intrusive thoughts.
Sadly, Lynsey’s story isn’t a one off. There are many women who experience a decline in their mental health during menopause and feel the only answer is to take their own life. This ‘insight’ that Kieran describes here is something I see quite often and it’s very different to how people usually present when they are mentally unwell.
It’s really important that there’s more support for these women and that women’s hormones are not overlooked #WorldSuicidePreventionDay
