This photograph captures a moment from a period when access to the North Pole was becoming possible for civilian and scientific expeditions. The vessel behind him is the Soviet nuclear-powered icebreaker Rossiya, one of the most powerful ships ever built for polar navigation.

Launched in 1983, Rossiya belonged to the Arktika class of icebreakers, designed to smash through sea ice more than 2 meters (6.5 feet) thick. Powered by nuclear reactors, these ships could operate for months without refueling and were essential for keeping Arctic shipping routes open.

The North Pole itself has no permanent land beneath it. It sits atop drifting sea ice in the Arctic Ocean, about 700 kilometers (435 miles) from the nearest land. By 1990, Soviet icebreakers had begun carrying international visitors, scientists, and explorers to a destination that had once been accessible only to the most ambitious polar expeditions.

In 1977, the Soviet icebreaker Arktika became the first surface ship in history to reach the geographic North Pole. Its success demonstrated that nuclear-powered icebreakers could reliably navigate the central Arctic Ocean, transforming polar research and exploration.
