@ChrisPage90 @metoffice Very surprised. No obvious pattern conducive to a warm circulation pattern, pretty much mixed/ variable conditions that historically have led to average temperatures and rainfall totals. Perhaps the only forcing factor is European warmth, and exceptional North Sea heat

Could '50 days of rain is possible' [this summer] provide useful information about flood impacts if it were factual? No. Surface water flooding associated with higher rainfall totals during the summer months largely occurs as a result of thundery downpours following heatwaves.

@BBCJustinR I would say make use of a journalist already present. With the deluge of fake news articles I have seen about climate change, twisting and manipulating media and expert sources, being present to show the situation on the ground ‘as it is’ is essential for convincing journalism.

@catinsight Interesting. Many in the Met community believed that the Public Weather Service should deliver all media forecasts - such that info is consistent across channels. Pros and cons. More discrepancy between providers now, but an app to compare forecasts could convince skeptics.

@catinsight Uncharted territory I guess then! I was just curious what Python’s bilinear, or cubic interpolation function would do. It seems quite powerful at filling large gaps in geospatial data.

@catinsight Interesting. Can you plot as a contour line map after performing a regular grid interpolation? That may prove a good indication to what happens outside of the historical distribution.
