Shipping carries around 95 per cent of UK trade, keeping goods, energy and materials moving—often quietly and without much public attention. However, its strategic importance remains, with the sector central to national resilience, economic security and competitiveness.
Against that backdrop, on 27 May our CEO Rhett Hatcher joined leaders from across defence, government and the maritime community at The White Ensign Association’s Annual Maritime Seminar to explore the challenges shaping the industry.
The discussion reinforced a clear reality: resilience is built in advance, and shipping is fundamental to it.
Thank you to the @The_W_E_A team for bringing us all together for such an important discussion — find out more in the post below👇
Senior leaders from Defence, industry and the maritime sector gathered yesterday for our third annual #WhiteEnsignMaritimeSeminar
Featuring video messages from @GenGJenkinsRM and @KeirMatherMP, and with @SecondSeaLord participating, the discussion explored maritime challenges.
Last week, our CEO Rhett Hatcher joined leaders from across the sector for the first session of the 2026 Maritime Leaders’ Shipping Forum. We are proud to support the Forum alongside sponsor Wallenius Lines and our partners at the Council on Geostrategy (@ConGeostrategy).
With the UK’s resilience beginning at sea, convening this group has never been more important. A strong opening session – we look forward to building on it in the months ahead. #MLSF2026

Building a more diverse maritime workforce starts with inspiring the next generation 🛳️
The Merchant Navy Training Board’s (MNTB) Careers at Sea campaign is doing exactly that, combining a large scale public awareness drive with a long established volunteer ambassador programme to tackle ‘sea blindness’ and bring careers in maritime to life.
In this Nautilus (@nautilusint) piece, MNTB’s Business Operations & Skills Manager Susan Bell, alongside Nautilus member and ambassador Phil Johnson, share how real world insight in classrooms is helping young people better understand the opportunities our industry offers.
On IMO (@IMOHQ) International Day for Women in Maritime, the impact of initiatives like Careers at Sea is clear, widening access to information and inspiring a more diverse pipeline of future talent.

Today, on the IMO (@IMOHQ) International Day for Women in Maritime, Stef Kenyon, our Director of External Affairs, is featured in SAFETY4SEA’s (@safety4sea) “Women in Maritime Watch”, sharing her perspective on what the industry must prioritise to advance gender equality.
The feature brings together industry voices responding to two key questions: what one action will deliver real progress, and what message does the industry need to hear now?
In her comments, Stef highlights the need to move beyond well-intentioned commitments — with accountability, stronger visibility of maritime careers, and sustained action across organisations.
