Something about what happened at the Seoul Defense Dialogue on September 8, 2026 deserves attention beyond the viral soundbite.

The Chinese side sent Philippine Defense Secretary Gibo Teodoro a note reiterating China’s rejection of the 2016 arbitral award.

His response?

“Of course, because you lost.”

Funny, yes. But there is a serious point underneath it.

China is a party to UNCLOS. The Philippines pursued a legal remedy and won.

A ruling doesn’t suddenly become meaningless because the losing party refuses to recognize it.

Otherwise, what is international law for?

This is particularly important for smaller countries.

The Philippines cannot match China ship for ship or in military and economic power. But sovereignty cannot depend on who has the bigger navy.

If that were the rule, smaller nations would have rights only when larger nations permitted them.

Then came Sec. Teodoro’s now-famous:

“Mahiya naman kayo nang konti.”

Have some sense of shame.

This is why this resonated.

This is not about being anti-China. We can cooperate with China while defending Philippine interests.

It is simply refreshing to see a Filipino official on an international stage who didn’t act as though our country needed permission to stand its ground.

We know what the law says. We know what belongs to us. And we should defend it.

We may be smaller, but we are not lesser. 🇵🇭
