Toshl’s personal story has impressed me deeply. I read an English fan translation some years ago but was determined to buy his book someday. This month I finally travelled to Japan for the first time and grabbed the chance to buy “Brainwashed - my comeback from 12 years of hell”.

Toshlは、かつてX JAPANのボーカルとして、日本の音楽シーンの頂点に立っていた。東京ドームを埋め尽くす圧倒的な人気と実力を持ちながら、その内面では強いプレッシャーと疲労に追い込まれ、「自分が何のために歌っているのか分からない」という深い苦しみを抱えていた。

そんな中で出会ったのが、自己啓発団体「ホームオブハート」に関わる女性だった。最初は「本当の自分を取り戻せる」「心が救われる」と感じ、彼はその世界に足を踏み入れていく。しかし次第に状況は変わり、団体の中で行われる厳しい指導や長時間のセッションによって、人格を否定され続けるようになる。「お前はダメな人間だ」「ここにいなければ生きていけない」といった言葉を繰り返し受ける中で、思考力や判断力は徐々に奪われていった。

やがて彼の価値観は大きく変わり、1997年、突如としてX JAPANを脱退する。激しいロックを否定し、静かな音楽へと方向転換したその姿は、ファンにとっても理解しがたいものだった。この脱退によってバンドは解散し、日本の音楽シーンに大きな衝撃が走る。

脱退後の生活は過酷だった。彼は団体の方針のもと、全国各地で小規模なライブを繰り返すようになる。公民館や学校などを回り、アコースティック中心の公演を続け、その数は3000回以上にのぼったと言われている。しかし、その活動で得た収入の多くは自由に使えるものではなく、結果として莫大な金銭を失うことになった。

それでも彼がその環境から抜け出せなかったのは、「ここを離れたら自分は終わる」「外の世界の方が危険だ」という強い思い込みに縛られていたからだった。人間関係や情報もその中に限定され、外の世界とのつながりはほとんど断たれていた。

だが長い年月の中で、金銭的な問題や団体の矛盾に気づき始める。「本当にこれでいいのか」という小さな疑問が芽生え、それが次第に大きくなっていった。そして2010年、ついに団体と決別し、長く続いた関係にも終止符を打つ。すべてを断ち切ったその時、彼は「やっと目が覚めた」と語っている。

成功の頂点から一転し、すべてを失うほどの状況に陥りながらも、そこから抜け出したこの経験は、単なる芸能界の出来事ではなく、一人の人間が極限の状況から立ち直った現実の物語として語り継がれている。

@learning_yohei Yes, and I don’t feel comfortable in those stretches of the Autobahn at all because there’s always someone approaching from behind at 220 km/h. Luckily the speed is limited in certain parts for various reasons (nature, noise, bridges …).

@yuzuchyanman It’s a precious memory for me, too: The first ever live experience of Yuzu for my family was Otoñal in Helsinki, so it will always have a special place in my heart. And now I could see it live again. In his hometown! It had been my dream to go to Japan ever since 2018.
